I just purchased an Accu-Chek kit and it came out 16.3 mmol/L

Is this good? Bad?

The reason I’ve decided to home test is because my vet was a mess. First he said Herbert needed 2 units twice a day, then I called to get a curve done (which they messed up and didn’t even do for the proper amount of time and didn’t feed him his usual meal) and they said his levels were dangerously low and to only give him 1 unit once a day… which I’ve never heard of for a cat? They sent us home with the wrong insulin, thank god I noticed. After getting the normal Lantus that we use they wanted to continue testing him at one unit a day, so we went all the way there for our first test and they didn’t have any strips. Said they would call when they did and have never called back. I need to just do this myself but I can’t figure out the numbers.

I think you might want to move your post to the "Feline Health Wecome and Main Forum" section. you are in the tech issues section. :)

Good for you for starting home testing. (I moved your post over here). From a previous post, I see you are lower mainland like me. 16.3 is mmol/L which is a measurement system used by the rest of the works, unlike the US which uses the mg/dL system. 16.3 mmol/L is the equivalent of 293 in mg/dL. We tend to use the US way of measuring things here, as the server is located in the US, as are a large number of the members.

16.2/293 is in the diabetic range. Normally cats get dosed twice per day with Lantus - cats have faster metabolisms than humans who take Lantus once per day.

You do know you can buy Lantus OTC at a human pharmacy here. I've found Safeway pharmacy and Costco have some of the cheapest prices.

Hi and welcome,
I unit of Lantus is a good starting dose. I would stay with that until you have gathered some data.
Sorry you had such a bad start with the vet. They do sound disorganised!
This LINK may help you figure out the BG numbers and also give you other information.
You have come to the best place for help and support
