Many years ago my Raja was diagnosed as diabetic. I was petrified and this board was our saving grace. In more ways than one. Unfortunately Raja passed away in 2012 from pancreatitis.

Over the years I’ve been adopted by several kitties and one, my precious tortie Ella, was diagnosed today with diabetes.

I’m not nearly as scared as I was with Raja, but I’m still worried about my Ella.

BTW, Raja will always live on thanks to you guys. She’s actually the YouTube link on how to check blood sugar from your cat’s paw.

So here we go again!

Hi and welcome back. I’m sorry about Raja.
How can we help you?
Are you going to be hometesting the BGs and setting up a spreadsheet?
HELP US HELP YOU has lots of useful information for you.

Yes I’ll be doing a spreadsheet. Was able to test her blood last night but this morning there just wasn’t enough and I stuck her 4 times.

it’s going to be slow going for us, especially since I’m rusty but I’ll get the hang of it all soon.

Actually I do have a question.

vet wants her on 1 unit lantus twice a day. I’m going to go with her numbers but leaning towards .5 twice a day to start.

I leave the house at 6:30 every morning and don’t get home until 5:30ish.
I planned an overnight stay a few hours away for Saturday.
So would Sunday be enough time to observe her with lantus? Or should I wait until next weekend when I can observe her from Friday night until Monday morning?

I’m not sure I understand the question you are asking about observing her from Friday night until Monday morning. And also the overnight stay…not sure how long you will be away. Will she still get her insulin?
If you are asking about when to start the insulin, I would start sooner rather than later.
I would also start with 0.5 units twice a day and get some tests in during the pm cycle when you will be home.
I would leave snacks out for her during the day while you are at work and also at night. If you don’t have an automatic timed feeder, I would recommend you look into maybe getting one….they are a life saver for diabetic cats.
If you need help with the spreadsheet we can help you.

I was asking if it was better to wait until next weekend to start giving her lantus. Sorry, I know I was rambling

I’ve had her on a strict wet diet, no insulin yet, and this morning her bG was 219. I’m going to continue this for a bit and see what just changing her diet will do.
