I'm back - the honeymoon is over.....

Hello, My Martini is now 15 and her diabetes has come back. Both her brothers were diabetic also. We did honeymoon for quite a few years without ever starting insulin - just a diet change. After that I kept feeding FF pates, Friskies pates and occasionally other pates just for a change. I'm thinking it's her age that is not helping with the remission as pates have been the only food.
We have started insulin - 1/2 unit Lantus twice a day. I think I miss a few shots as I get very nervous giving the needle, but cannot repeat just in case I did not miss. We started a curve yesterday (husband is very reluctant to do this -hates needles) and the numbers were high so I gave 1 unit of insulin last night. This morning before food, the number was higher and I gave 1 unit again. The number started coming down after that. I think she will have to be on this dose for a few weeks in order for us to see any significant changes. I will give the #'s to the vet on Monday and see what she says. Martini is also asthmatic and gets a puff every day.

What are you feeding? A low-carb canned is best. No reason for a prescription food. Here is a list of commercial low-carb canned

I assume that Martini's "puff" is a steroid? If so, when did that diagnosis and medication start? Just wondering if that is what brought on the diabetes. Have her teeth been checked? Wonder also if there could be a brewing infection. Tooth issues brought our first diabetic out of remission twice until we got them taken care of.

Also let us know what kind of numbers you are seeing now, and you could start a spreadsheet so that you can get feedback if you'd like. It's a handy form to share numbers with your vet as well.

Thank you to both of you. Even tho I know what we are supposed to do - we are having difficulties doing it. Nice to meet you also!
I am still feeding FF pate, Friskies flaked tuna, Natural Instinct rabbit and venison are the only ones she likes. Martini is on flovent. She has been asthmatic for most of her life. I don't believe that is a factor, and her teeth have been checked yes.
The biggest problem is my husband who is the one pricking her ear and he hates doing it. I cannot do it by myself even with a towel. He just is not patient enough.
I will look into your spreadsheet for sure, I have the numbers to give to the vet tomorrow. We'll see what she says.
