For all those who wondered...Jack is home with me...Yay!

I am a little concerned. Jack had been running in the 400's due to the flight to Oklahoma and Dad not following vet's orders. When I got him to Oklahoma, I took him to the vet who increased his levemir by 1 unit 2x a day so now its 4.

Well I went to a friends house tonight. I gave him his shot a few hours early probably 2-3 hours early so probably 6-7 hours between shots but I scaled his insulin back a unit because it was early. I left plenty of food for him. Then my neighbor friend was going to check on him.

Well my neighbor came in to check on him and only saw my other cat. I am guessing Jack is hiding in his favorite hiding spot which he does all the time.

I am kind of worried about hypoglycemia. I know I am probably being paranoid but hes 12. I waited about 20 minutes before I left the house and he was fine. My neighbor is going to check in the morning but I am still I know being a worry wort but still.

Should I be concerned or am I being paranoid.
 
Giving a depot insulin early acts like a dose increase, so yes, I would be concerned because you also increased the dose, too. Can you get the person to search for him?
 
I actually scaled it back when I gave it to him..I gave him 3 tonight instead of 4.

does 2 hours really make a difference?
 
It depends on how closely you've been regulating him.

On Tight Regulation, where folks shoot low to stay low, yes, 2 hours can be critical. We change shot times no more than 30 minutes a day when following the Tight Regulation protocol and for some cats, divide that into 15 minutes per shot.

How low have his nadir period tests gone? If anywhere near 50 mg/dL on the new dose, get your friend over there now.
 
Nadir - the lowest glucose level between shots.

What is the lowest he has gone on the new dose?

If his lowest on the new dose is at or near 50 mg/dL, shooting early could take him too low, into hypoglycemia.

Tight Regulation - a protocol for dosing insulin which focuses on maintaining near normal glucose levels by using insulin.
 
If you are talking about what his blood glucose is,

its no where near tight protocol range..Hes still in the 200's on the new dose
 
He just came on a plane a month ago and got over a nasty sinus infection so we are trying to bring his glucose down
 
OK.

He may be OK, then.

Just be careful. As depot insulins build up effect on a new dose level, they can surprise you by dropping the cat lower than anticipated.

Ill keep that in mind..I was trying to keep my friend from giving him a shot but she knows how to do it so I think Ill just do that if I have to be away
 
I'm glad he's OK.

I think having your friend give the shot at the regular time would be safer.
 
Yah and I didn't put two and two together that it would happen

The pens are very easy to administer so yes I will definetly will be doing that.

Dodged a bullet. Lots of us have that experience early on the board. I had to pull most of an all nighter when I switched the food and didn't drop the insulin dose. I stayed up feeding and checking until about 2 hours before I normally get up to go to work.
 
Yah Jack hasn't even had this for two years..I am sure you get more skilled as you go on.

He has been the best cat..Hes 12, He endured a plane flight that was delayed 36 hours..a new place, a new cat...and hes in pretty good health and is the calmest cat you will ever meet.

Hes the incredibly hulk cat
