IBD and metronidazole question

Hi all. My (non-diabetic) baby with IBD absolutely hates us giving her her metronidazole liquid. Tonight it was a huge fiasco and a lot of the metro went flying out of the dropper and not into the cat. We drew up another, partial dose, and ended up adding it to her food (huh-so much for "chicken flavored"). After the dust settled and my son and I were discussing it, I discovered there was a miscommunication error about how much to draw up for the partial dose. So here's my question: if she got a small amount over her usual dose, will this hurt her and, if so, should I head for the vet, or should I watch her for any issues? Honestly, I don't really think it was much over her usual dose, and since she didn't finish her dinner, she probably didn't ingest a good bit of it, anyway, but I've never used metronidazole before so I just want to cover my bases. Thanks for your help!
 
Was there a package insert for the medication?
If you had to estimate how much more you gave, what was the percentage over?
 
No package insert, I think the vet bottled it at the office from a bigger bottle. She' supposed to get 5ccs, she might have gotten 6/6.5, if that much.
 
So 6.5 / 5 = 1.3, 30 % more than you should have given.

You may want to watch for any of the side effects listed and if seen, go to the vet promptly, possibly to an emergency vet since some of the possibilities are neurological (brain affecting).
 
Thanks for the link! I think she must not have gotten that much, it's been two hours and she seems like her usual alert, playful self. I will continue to keep a close eye on her. :)

I had the tablets for Squallie, when he had a bad bout of diarrhea, and they were SO much easier to deal with. I guess the vet thought the liquid would be better for her, but yes, I really think giving her a pill would be easier than what we're going through. It's a huge struggle every time, and I usually have to do it without anyone here to help. And now that she knows it's coming, she runs and hides. What a challenge it's been!
 
I have been using metronidizole for MurrFee for about 1 1/2 years.
I stuff 1/4 of a 250 mg tab together with 1/4 of 10 mg tab of Pepcid AC and 1 mg budesonide in a #3 gelcap and give him that PM in AM is stuff 1/4 of a 250 MG tab of metronidizole in either a #3 or #4 gelcap. The budesonide come as 3 mg in a #4 gelcap so I reuse those gelcaps
 
She has finished her week of treatment with the metronidazole, and I really hoped that would be the end of it, but her vet wants her to stay on it for another week, fortunately only once a day this time.

I know Candy really hates it. She sees the dropper now and runs and hides. She gets way back in the corner under my bed where I can't get her; once I finally get a hold of her she squirms and wriggles so much that half the meds go on me, on her, or whatever piece of furniture I have her on. She's tiny, only seven pounds, and it takes a minimum of two people to get 1/2 dropper-full in her, lol!

Thank you, I need all the good thoughts I can get! Of my four kitties, only one, at this point, has nothing going on with him. Poor boy, I think he feels neglected, because the others are all so needy at the moment, lol! But I'm not going to complain, it could be so much worse. :):):)
 
@Cat Ma, I don't know why, but your post "@Squalliesmom has Candy's diarrhea improved yet?" isn't showing here, although I got notification of it in my email.

Thanks for asking. Yes, it has improved greatly, but she's still getting a low dose of metronidazole once a day. Hopefully when we finish that up on Friday we'll continue to see the improvement, fingers and paws crossed!

What are gel caps and where do you get them?
 
Bobbie and Bubba....we have also had to give Morrigan the metronidazole as well for 4 rounds. We also had the liquid and often would end up with it all over the place vs in her mouth! Sometimes, she got a bit in her mouth and we re-loaded and tried again. I found that we had to "wean her off" of it (vet recommended) too...once a day, then once every other day, then once every third day and off. It was HARD to get that into her and she STILL leaps when she thinks we may be coming at her with the syringe! :eek: o_O :rolleyes: There was no "easy way" to get it into her. Honestly, we had to both be available. One would hold her and the other would squirt it inside her cheek. Mind you...she was only on 1 ml but, the ONLY thing we found that helped was getting the "fatter" syringes so that it as a quicker "insert" and we'd push that plunger as quickly as possible! :woot::confused: Then, I'd TRY to give her a treat or food or something she liked to get the taste out of her mouth. She sometimes wanted it and other times, she'd just RUN! :eek: :cool: :confused:
 
The metro must taste really really bad... The pharmacy offered it to me in pills or liquid and I had an easier time with liquid so I asked for that. They put chicken flavor in it to make it more palatable.... Marshmallow absolutely hated it so the flavoring didn't help at all. :eek: Poor kitties.

That sounds exactly like Candy's reaction to it. She runs if she sees the bottle, I have to hide it from her until we can get a hold of her, and then she struggles wildly to get away. It takes two of us to hold her (and she only weighs 7 lbs!); I wear a lot of the metro, and more goes down her chin than actually stays in her mouth.

The pharmacy may think it tastes like chicken but Candy certainly doesn't, lol!
