This is my first time posting. My 11 year old IBD cat Nello was just diagnosed with diabetes yesterday. My vet told me that she wants to take Nello off of predisolone because this is what is most likely causing the diabetes. Does anyone have a cat with IBD and diabetes that is sucessfully treating both? Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Cindy & Nello

We have lots of people with IBD and diabetes. Until they come along, here is a old post with some good info on diet for IBD: viewtopic.php?p=111156 There is a correlation between steriods and diabetes.

Can we also help with the diabetes? We use a very successful protocol that emphasizes wet lo carb food, testing blood sugars at home and starting with a low dose of a mild, long lasting insulin. What insulin is he on? Dose?

I would talk to your vet about using the steroid budesonide instead of the pred. Budesonide stays mainly in the GI tract and has little effect on BGs. Two of my diabetics are on budesonide.

Nello's blood sugar was almost 400. My vet said that even though he is diabetic, that Nello is a stable diabetic and she did not want to rush into changing anything without consulting a specialist first. This makes me nervous! I called her office yesterday (She was not in) and let a message about the budesonide that you suggested Larry. I am waiting to hear back from her. Larry, were your cats diabetic before or after starting the budesonide? Also, has anyone been able to stop using the insulin when switching to this drug?

Sue, Nello currently is on a diet of Fancy Feast Tender Beef Feast and FF Ocean White Fish, and Indigo Moon Holistic cat food (Dry) and Before Grain Salomn (Dry). I will need plenty of help with getting Nello regulated. He does not pill well nor do well with injections. He gets extremely stressed and froths at the mouth.

Is the vet doing blood glucose tests? We urge people to test at home so they had get a true bg reading without vet stress. Members here have tested feral cats so hopefully we can help you test Nello.

You need to know his bg levels. I am assuming he is not yet on Insulin?

The vet just did the one test which was 400. I just spoke with the vet and she thinks that if I wheen him off the pred. over the next couple of weeks, his BG will go back normal and he will not need insulin. She is putting him on another prescription diet (This is his 3rd and he never eats any of them), tylosin and one other medication. Has this worked for anybody?

Which prescription diet?

Your cat may have steroid induced diabetes but may still require insulin, although possibly short term. Delaying insulin can put your cat at risk for complications like fatty liver and ketones, so I wouldn't recommend it. I would recommend keeping him on whatever food works for his IBD (not usually fish), starting an insulin like lantus or levemir at a low dose, and learn to home test blood glucose levels.
