The nutritional analysis sheet I obtained from IandLoveandYou is incorrect. The DMA columns and the As Fed columns sum to 100% without accounting for carbohydrates.
On Dr. Pierson's chart, Wholly Cow looks like it is low carbohydrate (3% of calories) and low Phosphorus (140 mg per 100 kcal).
That seems too good to be true, and I believe there is an error.
I spoke with the quality manager at the company today, hoping they could give me corrected numbers for their nutritional chart.
Instead, they said their products are all high in protein and consequently high in Phosphorus.
They didn't want to go into a discussion of carbohydrates.
Tanya (felinecrf.org) lists Phosphorus for Wholly Cow at 1.3% DMA.
My cats do love Wholly Cow, but I am not comfortable feeding Yum something with an uncertain carbohydrate and phosphorus nutritional profile.
I submitted this information to Dr. Pierson on her website.

Thanks for that info. I feed most flavors of I and Love and You to my cats because supposed to be low carb and 3 of them are dealing with pancreatitis and one has kidney issues in addition so low phosphorus is a must. Do you have other foods you fed that are low phosphorous and low carb? I am always looking. Thanks.

Thanks for checking and letting us know. I wouldn't have no idea how to figure that out. I just trust the food chart.

There are lists of low carb/low phosphorus foods in the Welcome to Lantus sticky. Of course cats are very picky. Mine won't eat most of the recommended foods (past experience with a CKD only cat). Yum's CKD diagnosis on top of diabetes is barely a week old, so I am still in panic mode. I think the RADCAT raw foods are low carb, low phosphorus. According to my possibly erroneous calculations, the lamb is just 86 mg Phosphorus per 100 kcal (wow! wow!), and the turkey is 130 (wow!). They are close to 0 carb and they don't contain bone. I'm not sure I want to feed them raw, and then if I do---homemade or store bought? Yum INHALES the lamb, and almost inhales the turkey. I cut out their favorite (but never inhaled), super high phosphorus Fancy Feast classic pates this week. I was trying Primal raw freeze-dried turkey, which might be 186 mg phosphorus per 100 kcal (from memory and personal calculations). Yum eats it, but only last. Right now I am giving her the radcat lamb or turkey plus Wellness Chicken or Turkey. The Wellness pates look good on Dr. Pierson's chart, but I haven't double checked them. Wellness just sent me more nutritional information, on which I have yet to crunch the numbers. I will report on them if my calculations do not match Dr. Pierson's numbers, at least approximately. I also just picked up Soulistic Chicken dinner from PetCo this afternoon, a pate and shreds. It looks good on Dr. Pierson's chart, and they have an elaborate nutritional analysis online---which I have yet to examine. I am adding phosphorus binders to the Wellness pates, as Yum's phosphorus was elevated to 7.6 on the Fancy Feast pates in her bloodwork last week. I know they will be above 200 mg phosphorus per 100 kcal. I need to get her phosphorus numbers down.

Good luck.

I just scraped the Wellness off her plate. It is super high phosphorus. I posted the numbers from the company in another thread an hour or so ago. Argh.

Thank you, thank you for sharing this info . What the heck are these companies thinking ? My homeopathic vet said as quality of meat goes down the phosphorus typically goes up. Ahhhhhhhh:arghh::arghh::arghh:

It seems when it comes to pet food we can't get straight answers or the real truth. I am not inclined to feed raw. I know there are freeze dried options like Honest Kitchen that you mix with water. I have my dog on that but he doesn't love it. I have a vet I consult with because the pancreatitis issue; she practices both traditional and holistic. She says get cats off chicken as much as possible. They are finding cats are becoming allergic to it because we overfeed it and it causes stomach issues like pancreatitis, IBS, etc. It's hard to do since they seem to like it but I'm trying others. Sometimes I think it's just important that they eat and keep their weight good and be happy. The issue with the phosphorous is really irritating. Even if we follow all the vet protocols we can't stop kidney disease. So for me it's the quality of life. How long can I really prolong the sad, heartbreaking inevitable truth that we will lose our fur kids to this awful disease. I don't want to feed food they don't want nor gives them any pleasure. I am trying never to feed any prescription diets because I think they are all crap. Reading the label makes me gag. My other vet hears it from me all the time. Then I think if it were me. I have a disease that can't be fixed but maybe it could prolong my life a bit but have to eat things I don't like and still feel crappy. I pretty sure I would pick eating what I want and feeling crappy rather than the other option. Sorry for the rant!

It is really frustrating. Yum's mother had CKD and it was somewhat reversed and completely stabilized with a prescription diet, especially the prescription kibble.
She was happy.
Of course I can't use a prescription diet on a cat with diabetes and early CKD.
Phosphorus binders are one solution. I'm still experimenting. Yum is getting a bewildering buffet every meal. I am very stressed out, but better me than her.

Soulistic chicken pate and shreds from PetCo is low carb low phosphorus. Of course Yum doesn't like it.
