I won't be home for PM shot tomorrow, advice?

I won't be home tomorrow night for Oscar's PM test/shot. I'm going to a comedy show and this once and only time, I won't be there. I give him his shot's 8am/8pm EST. I'm leaving the house around 4 and won't be home until around midnight (probably), so gradually moving shot's up wouldn't have been an option, plus it would have further messed things up the next few days because of my work schedule...I know that's usually what is suggested here.

Any suggestions on what I should do? I really don't want to entirely skip the shot, if you look at my SS you'll see that his numbers are consistently running high. But the only other option I can think of is having a family member come over and do it. I know they would, but I'm not sure I'd want them to. I can't imagine they would be able to get a test done, and them blindly shooting him would make me very nervous. I'm not sure what to do.

Maybe if you have a family member do it you can lower the dose for just tonight to 1U to feel safe snce they won’t be able to test. Then get a test in immediately when you get hometown see where the cycle is heading. . At least he will get something

Is it okay to draw the syringe and get it ready ahead of time? That's another worry, that they'll mistakenly give a larger dose. I'm sure it's unlikely but I'd still feel better if I already had it loaded.

While it’s not recommended particularly with Prozinc I would still say it’s better than nothing. I’d wait till the last minute to prepare the syringe and instruct whoever is going to shoot to gently roll the syringe to mix prior to injecting.

You clearly understand the importance of testing before every shot, but this is a special circumstance, and I personally would not be scared to have someone give him his full dose without testing this one time. He runs high consistently. If you test before you leave, you will be able to confirm that he is already high enough, and you know it will most likely be even higher by shot time. You will probably be home by +4, and you can test then. His nadir (lowest point in cycle) probably does not occur until after +4, so 'if' he was by some fluke heading down too low, you would probably have time to steer him up with some carbs. It looks like he will probably need a dose increase very soon, so I would not want to drop the dose and confuse the numbers since you are about to have to make a call on an increase.

I think I have a better idea. I'll prepare a syringe but just for an 'example' for my mom to look at. I'll show her how I get it ready before I leave, and leave the syringe for her so when she does it later she can compare it. I'll just toss the example afterwards. I've already had to trash a few doses after accidentally bending a syringe, so what's one more anyways.

Yeah what you said makes a lot of sense to me, he's never gone "too low" before so it'd be very weird for it to happen. And since I'll be home before his nadir I can test during that time, better than skipping his dose. I really don't want to mess with his dose or schedule now because I plan to do another .25 increase in 3 days (that'll make 7 days where he's had consistent high numbers on 1.25). It just makes me nervous to have someone else do it for the first time, but looking back on the first time I gave him his shot, it was easy peasy. Would it be okay to show her once with an empty syringe before I leave?

I have one more thought, and please correct me if this is completely stupid. But what if I skipped his shot tonight (and had him eat ONLY low carb wet food) and then for his AM shot, I increase his dose? I have no doubt he needs an increase anyways, and I feel like I might be being a little too cautious waiting 3 extra days for the increase. My first option is to have my mother come over and give him his shot, but if for one reason or another it can't be done (she gets nervous easily and I worry she will back out, and I certainly don't want to force someone whose nervous to give him a shot anyways) would this be a reasonable second option?

Just thought I'd give an update, everything went fine tonight and my mom gave Oscar his insulin. I just came home and tested him, he's definitely safe although a little mad I left him lol.

Glad to hear. I know it’s stressful when you have to leave care to someone else. I travel frequently for work and while I’m still stressed leaving, and I worry while I’m gone, I’m not a total mess anymore. It does get easier.
