Skipper has been OTJ since February. I think Friday he got into the dog's food and then threw it up all over the house. The next day he would barely move. I gave him water in a syringe and eventually he started drinking and eating (not as much as normal) again. However, his BC which got as high as 398, will not come down. The lowest it has been in 2 days is 319 and it is staying between 320 and 350. I kept in contact with the vet over the weekend and we had talked about getting some insulin today if nothing had changed. My mom was at the Walmart pharmacy waiting on the vet to call it in when they (thebvet clinic) decided they wouldn't give me the prescription without seeing him again. I couldn't leave work to take him in so we have an appointment in the morning with a vet closer to where I live.
I know there are some common medical problems that will cause the BC to go up again but I can't remember some that I have read here in the past.
Anyway, just thought I'd drop in for encouragement.

RaeAnn, so sorry to hear that Skipper has had a setback. Darn dog food, anyway! I do think it's a good idea to have the vet check him over before moving forward with insulin. Let's hope this is just a little bump in the road for Skipper and that he will soon be back to good health. Best of luck with your vet appointment. Keep us posted as to what's going on with your little fur baby. In the meantime, is there any place else you could locate the dog food where Skipper might not be able to get into it? If he did it once, he will likely do it again. Kitties are like that.
 
Infection or pain are the two big culprits that will elevate BGs. So a vet trip before starting back on insulin is probably a wise choice. It could be something as simple to fix as a UTI or a bad tooth that has sent him soaring again. Hopefully whatever caused him to lose remission will only be temporary and he'll go right back into OTJ status once it is corrected.

Right now I have a little guy that just went back on the juice because of a cooking accident that got his paws burnt and the salve for them has a mild steroid in it, so he is also back on the juice and we are crossing our fingers once he's healed up again that he too will also go back to OTJ status.

Just got home from the vet. No secondary infection but low potassium and electrolytes probably from the vomiting, diarrhea and the high blood glucose. No ketones in his urine. They wanted to keep him and give him IV fluids and insulin there but I think he does better at home. Last time the vets office could never get his BG under 500 but it dropped rapidly once he was home.
They gave him this fluid injection w/ potassium and electrolytes. It made a hump on his back and his body will absorb it. They also sent two doses of insulin because they didn't have Prozinc. So I'll get that ordered in the meantime.

It is possible to give fluids at home if more or needed.

The trick is to keep the cat still.
