I have a 13 year old male kitty who was diagnosed with diabetes in September 2016. He exhibited all the normal symptoms, ravenous appetite, overconsumption of water and unusually large amount of urine. My vet kept him for a glucose curve and decided he needed 2 units of lantus twice per day, 12 hours apart. As of the end of October after approximately 6 weeks after he started on lantus, he was showing signs of hypoglycemia and I took him back in. It turned out we were giving him too much insulin and his diabetes was going into remission so we took him down to 1 unit twice per day. After about 3 weeks of that he started showing signs of hypoglycemia again, went back to the vet and was told to drop him to 1/2 unit twice per day. On Christmas Eve, I took him in again and was told to remove him from lantus completely.
Now we're here. He was totally fine and seemed like a brand new cat for the first few weeks off insulin and just maintaining his diabetic diet. Over the course of the last few days he has began to refuse food completely. He is interested and acts like he wants it but when it's in front of him, he won't eat it. I have tried chicken broth, plain boiled chicken breast shredded, all kinds of different diabetic approved soft foods, diabetic hard foods, and he will not eat anything except tuna juice. He does not have increased thirst, he still uses the litter box. He is very clearly lethargic and doesn't like to walk far or jump up on things at all anymore. It's like I have a totally different cat. I took him to the vet two days ago and was told his glucose is good, his blood work didn't reveal anything abnormal, I was given mirtazipine for appetite stimulation and he was given an antibiotic in case of infection. Nothing has changed. It's almost like he has given up.
Has anyone here seen this before?
