eddie has been recording low-ish numbers recently....and i've been skipping his shots as a result.

last night he recorded a 9.4 (169) and this morning (with NO PM shot) he recorded an 8.9 (160) (he was a bit stressed too...the ear prick didn't come so easily this morning)!

i'm again going to skip his shot...this will be the third one in a row. the last shot he has had was the night of the 23rd when he scored a 17.9.

i don't know if this will be temporary or not, but i'm liking the results so far...

so...is this good, that he's not getting shots...??

i'm feeding him strictly wet Purina DM mixed with a little chicken\turkey\chicken&beef Wellness.

Let me start by saying I know nothing about caninsulin, but Eddie was on prozinc (which I do know about), I'd probably still be giving him a microdose, like .10, because while those numbers are good, they're not 100% normal yet. I do think it's a very good sign that he's getting these numbers through diet alone - definitely a sign that his pancreas is waking up. Still, if you can help that healing process by providing a little insulin, it might even be better. Hopefully someone who knows more about caninsulin will come along. Great numbers, though! Very encouraging.

Are you still feeding the purina dry? If so, if you can remove that you may have a cat that goes into remission on diet alone. I agree with not shooting at the numbers you're seeing right now. I have not used Caninsulin but have used PZI (Idexx and BCP), Humulin N, and Levemir.

This is very encouraging. But these are still diabetic numbers. Kitties who are not on insulin should be in the 40 - 120 range, with most numbers running 100 and under. If you continue to skip shots, I am afraid you will "stall out"

As I posted yesterday, if he is completely off wet food and has been for more than a week or so, and if I were you, I would use the buy some U100 needles, use the conversion chart and start giving some micro doses - like .2 or .3 units, or even a drop.

This is a scary proposition, but possible. And I would say, necessary, if you want a kitty completely off insulin. The end of the sugar dance can be more work and scarier than the beginning.

Take a look at this spreadsheet that belongs to Lulus2Moms. They were using N but it acts similar to Canninsulin as it has a rather harsh action. Like Canninsulin it has no shed or overlap, so you can work with the dosage. They were giving drops at the end. They picked a no shoot number and then experimented with what .2 units and a drop would do. They had to adjust their dosage daily to make it work.

Hi.
I am going to advise differently to my peers here.

I also used caninsulin, had a kitty go off the juice and experienced a hypo with symptoms.
I tread very cautiously with caninsulin. It acts so differently the any other and has such strength in the first hours to drop a kitty.
My 'do not shoot below' number was 200, and we never had to give insulin again.

Did Abby run above 120? You bet, sometimes, but after spreading her meals apart so she was getting 4-5 smaller meals, low carb ( under 12% ) and testing at odd times of the day. She was never above 200 and I did not shoot.
over the course of a couple of weeks, she generally stayed down in the 60-120 range.

I would simply consider breaking the meals into smaller servings more often, so as not to overwhelm the pancreas and to encourage it to do its job, and keep testing at odd times of the day.

if you were to see a number above 200, then I would consider a teeny microdose, like 0.2.

You are doing great to have brought your kitty this far.
paws are crossed that he will drinking tunaritas at the falls soon ( the place where kitties hang on their honeymoons from insulin ) oh and antijinx :)

some more good readings...after a 9.4 last night and no shot, eddie scored a 7.2 this morning. it's been almost 3 full days without a shot.

Kimmee, thanks for the advice to spread his meals out throughout the day. i am working from home today so i can do that, but usually eddie has the run of the place during the day while i'm away at work.

i can't give him a microdose until i have a set of U-100 needles. all of my needles are U-40s. doh.

It is okay...he does not seem to want that microdose :)

Keep doing what you are doing, monitoring and watching for the clinical signs returning, more water drinking, more peeing, dandruff in coat etc.
You are doing exactly right.

You want to have a little discussion with his pancreas now and remind it what its job is.! :)

i was a little late tonight in giving him his PM test...about an hour later than usual. he already ate a bit. he scored a 6.2...lower than his AM score and he hasn't had any shots for 3 days now.

i'm very surprised at the turnaround here...a mere 15 days ago eddie was first diagnosed and he had his first insulin shot. is this normal now for him to be having such low BG numbers on diet alone? i know i should be happy, and i am...but i'm still cautious...is this just a honeymoon?

All I can say to that question is that my Max went into remission about two weeks after his first dose of insulin with a change in diet, back in October and so far so good as he is retaining his OTJ status. It is one of those every cat is different, so for now just keep testing and watching him and enjoy it for now.

both my cats went into remission after feeding them wet food... it was DM for Sophia at the time but now she hates it and I give her FF. She is diet controlled since 2005 after she had been several months on Insulin. I have read that every 8th cat can be diet controlled. I hope yours will be too that really would be nice since you seem to have some problems too with taking the blood. At our house it always was a terrible ordeal because Sophia fought like crazy.

eddie scored a 6.0 this morning! he may just be that lucky 8th cat :-D

i keep expecting his score to go up-up-up...but i'm always pleasantly surprised.

i am feeding him strictly Purina DM mixed with Wellness Chicken, Chicken&Beef or Turkey. he loooooooves the Wellness.

eddie scored a 4.6 last night. i gave him a break this morning and didn't test him. i'll test tonight...

i think i have diet-controlled-diabetic-kitty here...he's OTJ! (antijinx)
