I'm kind of stressed out about my appointment with an AC. I never "loved" her because I find her condescending (this is NOT Claudia from this board) but I went to her because she's supposedly good with animal behavior.

I found out Trinket is the one who attacked Merlin on Halloween (as expected) and the he is ABSOLUTELY baffled by it. I put a dracula cape on him to take his picture and when she saw him she thought he was a "monster cat" and didn't recognize him. They got in a death match and she ended up with a broken leg. She didn't know she was hurt until about an hour later because she didn't feel pain only adrenaline. She is happy now and sick of the crate, but when asked if she wanted to be alone in my bedroom and be able to move around OR be in the crate a little longer-she chose the crate because of the "good view". I've got it next to two ground level windows. The thing is I need to give the crate back and she can't be totally free yet. The only choice left is my bedroom for her.

My issue is Merlin. He's a nervous wreck. He feels that he could be attacked at any time in his own home. I wanted the AC to explain the story to him (about the costume so it would make sense as to why Trink attacked him) but the AC was such a know-it-all and made me feel like I was stupid for saying/asking the wrong thing. She says they are both happy and like me and don't "plan" on fighting but occassionally I see some weird body language between them. The AC says that fights tend to happen again and that Merlin needs time to get over this trauma. The call left me scared to death. I don't feel comfortable leaving them alone together unsupervised.

I need something for Merlin to help his anxiety. The AC suggested prozac or a homeopathic vet. I have a calming collar on him (expired-need a new one) and a Feliway diffuser. I said to the AC "what about Rescue Remedy" and she said (condescendingly) that is a flower essence and she thinks he needs a homeopathic vet. I can't afford it! I just spent about $4 grand on Trinket's leg operation! I NEED ADVICE! I am so pissed. Has anyone used Rescue Remedy? I plan on getting some. Is there anything else I can do before spending more $$$$ on a shrink for my cat? It's not a "crisis"....I'm not worried about them when I am with them, but I can TELL he's upset. He gets on her back to be dominant. She gets annoyed but not scared. I feel sorry for him - I can tell he's not himself and it's lowering his quality of life. When she's in the crate he's much better. He says he likes that she's in there!

I need to give the crate back soon to my land lords. Their cat is pooping all over the house and want to crate her at night. Should I but my own crate? I need to do something with Trinket while I'm at work to keep them safe. Should I keep her in my room (even though she doesn't want to be in there and freaked out this morning when I tried) Any thoughts? Any products?

Hmmm .. I don't have any experience with AC but I am sorry you didn't have such a good experience with yours .. I feel for you and the situation you have on your hands .. I hope others will be buy soon that have answers for you. Do you think maybe talking to another AC who might be able to explain the costume experience to merlin would work? At least he would know then why trinket reacted the way she did?

As I posted in Community my friend Katie lost her cat Oliver and used a AC. The woman took her 75.00 told her very vague clues none of which were helpful(we still have not found Oliver) and Katie said also she was condescending as well and very short with her. Hope you did not use one here in Columbus Ohio name not mentioned.
That was last Friday we are all very pissed. Oh when when Katie emailed her about if she could possibly give her anymore clues because Katie and DH live in a condo complex and the houses are mostly the same color, the woman said if she emailed her again she would have to charge her another consult fee after she gave her nothing.
So after Katie if out 75.00 and still missing her cat I will be going out with her again this evening to look for Oliver. I feel bad because I told her to try the AC and now shes out the 75.00

Maybe systematic desensitization would work.

In concrete measureable terms, figure out the goal vs the current reality
Next, identify small steps along the way and what each cat finds rewarding.
Combine these into a plan for reuniting them.

for example, you might feed them on opposite sides of a closed door, at a good distance for a week and treat calm, positive behavior
Next week, move a foot closer,
And so on.

You might put baby gates stacked in the doorway so they can see each other but interact minimally. (It'll take about 4, offset so they overlap, because they can be climbed!)

Repeat the feeding steps, this time in each other's presence beginning at a distance and gradually moving closer.
Reward good behavior with praise and treats. If a new step generates fear or hostility, back up to the previous step for a while.

Rinse & repeat.

When I first got Laura and had to introduce her to Scooter & Harley, it was hell at my house. After a couple months, I tried the Rescue Remedy and I believe it worked - flower essence or not. I put it on everyone's ears and within a month, I was able to take down the barrier screen. I do believe in the stuff and it is only about $13.

Re: I spoke to an animal communicator last night-need suppor

HI, I'm pretty new here but hopefully can add some info. It definitely wouldn't hurt to try Rescue Remedy - its about $10-ish at any natural foods store - rub it in the ear where the skin is with minimal fur twice a day. As for finding a crate - the ones at the pet store are expensive (in the $80 range) so I'd try and find one on Craigslist. For safety reasons I think that it would be better for them to be separated while your not home. I would definitely do a reintroduction where its just for short periods at first then gradually add time until they are reacquainted. There is nothing worse then two stressed cats and a stressed cat owner :). Jan

Re: I spoke to an animal communicator last night-need suppor

Thanks everyone. I think the baby gate idea is great, however, more money, but nothing's free. :o

I'll try the Rescue Rememdy first I guess since it's cheaper. Maybe I'll put some in my ear too.

They are fine home alone together if she's crated. I just looked in on them on my cat cam and she's sleeping. Earlier he was sleeping on top of her crate. They are fine that way. When I come hope I let her free and if she gets too crazt I leash her. When she's out of the crate is when he stars whining and talking in an anxious way. Getting on her back. Wrestling with her a little too hard. He's jumpy and wide-eyed all the time. I feel bad for him. He's always on edge. He's food aggressive too. If I feed her in another room it's okay, too close to him and he's growling.

I tried putting her in my bedroom this morning and moved all her stuff in there and closed the door. I opened the shades so there was light and a window for her. You'd think she was getting beaten by the sounds she was making. Absolutely FREAKING out with anxiety. She was LOUD too so I'd hear. She's never done this before. She wouldn't eat her food in there either. Sooooooo....I hauled her and her stuff out and back into the crate.

When I first got her she was confined to my room for a few weeks and she did okay other than slipping out a few times. Should I put her in my room despite her freaking out and just leave for work assuming she'll calm down? If I do the baby gate thing I'd still cinfine her in there. OR - should I ask my land lords to let me have the crate for longer? Doesn't it seem better for her to walk around a little as opposed to being confined? So frustrating!

Craigslist is often a good source for second hand crates and baby gates - how I got mine!

You might try short periods with him in a carrier and letting her roam while he is protected, and give him treats while he's in there.
The idea is to associate good things with her being around.

Actually....sometimes I put him in the crate and let her wander. He doesn't mind being locked in there. He goes in there to mooch her fuds. But - I think if I added treats he'd definitely wanna keep going in there!

And thank you for the Craigslist idea. I will do that. There must be tons of peeps with baby gates they want to get rid of.

Re: I spoke to an animal communicator last night-need suppor

Erik was attacking Emme, biting her and she would screech. He's 12+ pounds and she's just 8. So I have a couple of Feliway diffusers going and it seems to help. They still fight, but rarely is it that kind of mean fighting anymore.

I also use RR when people are coming to the house or the cats are heading to the vet. My vet actually suggested it. She had a patient with a couple of dogs who were impossible to handle when at the vet. They owner started using RR and their behavior changed dramatically. I think it helps. It sure doesn't hurt.

Another suggestion along the line of rescue remedy - spirit essences.

This is the same guy that did the show my cat from hell. He is also a behaviorist. I called him when I wasn't sure of which ones to use (i have a bully and and a gentle soul). He gave me a couple ideas to implement and got me on the right essences. Things have been much better since. (I had just filled out his application for behavior when everything seemed to turn with his suggestions and essences). I've personally had good luck with his products.

Also - instead of buying the calming collars - I made them myself at the time - i just soaked their current collar in either the spirit essences or the rescue remedy. Seemed to work just the same.

Good Luck!

Baby gates aren't going to work unless you get a few, put them on top of each other, and cover the whole opening. They'll just climb them and I don't think you want her climbing anything and risking a fall. If the landlord would allow it, you can remove door from room and put up an interior screen door. They make some really nice vinyl/plastic interior screen doors at Home Depot. I use them but I remove the screening and put on hardware cloth. Cats can see out better and lets air/heat flow through instead of being blocked.http://www.homedepot.com/Doors-Wind...Id=10051&catalogId=10053&superSkuId=202766451

They also work great for a new baby's room to keep pets out without closing the solid door.

Which fragrances did you use? That describes the situation between Callie and Tiger exactly. Maybe that will help stop Callie from attacking Tiger all of the time.

Re: I spoke to an animal communicator last night-need suppor

I used self esteem and bully remedy...but I also know he has peacemaker and several others...if you're not sure which one call him

Re: I spoke to an animal communicator last night-need suppor

I LOVE Jackson's show-though I can't find when it's on anymore. I thought he was great at what he did on My Cat From Hell. I like the way the products are formulated for certain behaviors. Thanks so much for the info.

Re: I spoke to an animal communicator last night-need suppor

Hi Hope-

Okay, it sounds like I can forget about the baby gate idea and the screen door isn't gonna happen. Last night and today she's still in the crate. Friday night when I don't have to get up the next day I'll try my bedroom at night and see how she does.

Re: I spoke to an animal communicator last night-need suppor

Thanks Celi. BTW- you probably don't really "know" me, but I've lurked on LL and followed some of your threads. Very entertaining stuff. I love the way you post pictures....do you put all of them into photobucket and then paste the link into your thread? It seems like such a pain. Is there an easier way?

I'm getting Rescue Remedy tonight from Whole Fuds. Hopefully I'll see a difference. If not I'll try ordering the Jackson Galaxy products. Whole Foods is easier!!!

Re: I spoke to an animal communicator last night-need suppor

Hi Guys,

don't forget, you can take rescue remedy yourself !!!! they say the more calm you are the more calm your pets will be. i've taken it one drop 3xday for a few days when needed. it's also great for job interviews, the walk down the aisle and other stresses. i always try to give it to my pets before a car ride or a trip to the vet (i put a drop on a treat and let them eat it)

the pet RR is in glycerine, the human one is in an alcohol base. either is fine, but if you have the alcohol one they suggest your leave the container open over night to let the alcohol evaporate.

i have also spoken with several animal communicators and people communicators. they are all different and all work in different ways. some get their information from pictures they are sent, some get their information from a spirit guide telling them what the other spirit (animal/person) said... etc. Some are just full of crap. the consistent thing i hear though is talk to them and tell them what's going on, what to expect, that you love them and they are safe, will be feeling better soon, etc.
an ex of mine had a cat who would poop on the rug, right in front of him in the middle of the living room while looking him in the eye. my ex was a tour guide and was on the road alot so he was left with a family member frequently. the psychic said Ben was upset because you leave him often and he never knows if you are ever coming back. after that Jerry always told Ben when he was leaving and when he'd be back and he never pooped on the rug again.
good luck!!
