My cat Scamp was diagnosed on Saturday and I have been giving her needles daily since but it hasn't been long enough for me to get into a routine!! So today I messed up and forgot to put her caninsulin in the fridge again and found it 9 hours later. I am wondering if I can still use it. Does anybody know??

I had one vet tell me if it has been out of the fridge for over an hour than it is no good and I had another vet say it's fine to have the caninsulin out of the fridge for 30 days. Needless to say I am confused and am thinking neither of them went to school for years to study drugs alone.

You're right Alix, information on the net are contradictory!

Do you have more than one vial? If not then, do you monitor your cat's Bg levels at home?
Cuz the worse case scenario with an insulin that has been out of the fridge too long, is that you'll see your cat's numbers climbing (meaning the insulin does not do its job anymore). And of course if that happens, you really should get rig of that vial.

If you monitor after an injection, you'll just see if the insulin is working like it's supposed to!

I think the second vet is about right. Leaving it out for 9 hours might mean that the insulin might stop working adequately before the vial is empty.

I really appreciate the advice - I am not home testing yet but I hope to - I would like to get Scamp a little closer to being stable (or have her levels moderated) before I start - it's only been 5 days since her diagnosis so I am still a basket case - she's okay though!!! I decided to give her a shot this am then I went and got fresh insulin from the vet so tomorrow I start again and hopefully I won' t mess up again.

Thanks again for the advice - I am glad I found somewhere that I can get information from "cat people" and who will understand.

Please start home testing as soon as possible it is the only way to keep Scamp safe. Most likely when you do that you will also see that the caninsulin does not have a long enough duration for Scamp. The best insulins for cats are Lantus, Levemir or PZI.

I know it's scary to start testing but it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it. Suggest you start getting Scamp used to the idea now by rubbing her ears as often as you think of it. That way she can start getting used to your new found obsession with her ears!

Hi guys and welcome! I couldn't agree more .. home testing is so important .. it can tell you if your kitty is in the safe zone or danger zone with her numbers .. We use the relion micro from wal mart .. it runs 9.00 for the meter, and you can buy a box of 20 strips for 9.00 as well (they also have larger boxes too) Try warming up your kitties ear right on the edge (there are EXCELLENT videos on this site to walk you through home testing) and make sure you have a treat ready too .. we use freeze dried chicken treats from our local pet store .. mocha loves them! I know your kitty was just diagnosed and this is all over whelming but trust me, you won't regret learning how to home test!

Surely it depends on the type of insulin ?
Lantus is fine 30 days at room temperature. Caninsulin I think is not (not sure). I would google for the drug leaflet, then you know.

Hi all thanks again for all the advise - luckily Scamp is used to me playing with her ears and one of my guys at work is going to bring me one of his blood test kits (he is a diabetic and his Drs. Wanted him to change the one he was using to a new type). I need to do some more learning and I am game to try - I have to take her in for a check up Saturday and will get the vet to tell me more. And, of course I will be checking this site cuz it seems everybody here is in the same boat.

For what it is worth I did google caninsulin and it said something about talking to the vet about it - that was a useless site that is for sure!!!

I still have to figure out her "symptoms" and when she is good or not. We (the vets and I) were hoping diet was going to control her levels but that did not work so here we are starting out trying to get her stabilized!! but I will find out more Saturday and I will bug my guy at work for the test kit (barely used and about 500 hundred strips - that should keep me going for a while!!). I am lucky for that - just looking for small blessing and finding them everywhere!!

Thanks for the encouraging words!!
