Hello Everyone!
I am new to the forum. I have 8 yeas old cat who was diagnosed with diabetes last year after I mentioned that she lost lot of weight. She went from 10 lbs to 7.8-7.4lbs. She was put on prescribed diabetic can diet MD which is also for weight loss. Now year later she is 6 lbs! I begged doctors to put her on different diet. She is starving, eating like a horse, not vomiting. They are "married" to Hill's diet. I was told to administer Insulin. I started to check her blood sugar to get the baseline. In the meantime I found the wonderful article about making my own kitty food. I did it, cat loves it and her blood sugar went down, but her weight is still the same, so far. I am worry, I don't know how much weight loss she can take. Any advice? I do not feed my cats commercial food any more! It's all garbage!
I would appreciate any suggestion. Thank you. Helen.
Helen,

I've moved your post to a separate topic. I did that, by clicking on the New Topic icon at the top of the list of posts.

MD is not necessary and is expensive.
What recipe are you using for the homemade diet? It is not easy to make a complete diet.
Do you have any BG values you can share with us.
Has your vet done a complete workup like blood analysis? Maybe something else is not right with your cat.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

If you are doing the well-balanced raw diet from catinfo.org you could try to add more skin.

The recipe calls for only half the skin but you could put it all in if you need to fatten her up. This skin is where the fat is.
Of course, Larry is right, we have to establish what recipe you are using.

Hello Deb, Larry and Robin:
Deb, thank you for helping me with posting my question.
Yes, Dr. did complete analysis, blood work, urine, X-rays.
I am using chicken recipe by Dr. Lisa Pierson. If you google her you can find interesting reading, including recipes, even video. There was powerful statement:
Mother nature knows the best what cats should eat. Let's do it her way.
Dr. Pierson said : Cats are obligate carnivores. We don't feed horses meat, so why do we feed our cats carbohydrates? Good question.
I used 3lbs of chicken tight-meat, skin. fat, bones, all of it plus eggs and supplements, partially baked. My diabetic cat loves it. No wonder, after that garbage MD diet she loves anything (she always tried to steel my other cat's food). Now my other cat is starting to eat it too.
Thank you all for listening to me. Helen.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Oh yes! you found Dr. Lisa Pierson, DVM and cat nutritionist on your own! We highly recommend her website to many people here.

How is your cat doing? What's her name? You forgot to tell us that.

How is her weight doing now?

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Hi Deb,
her name is Kochinka, she is Balinese (looks like Siamese but has more hair, mane, bushy tail). My other cats name is Fluffy, he is a boy. Kochinka's weight is around 6 lbs. I just made my first 6 lbs of cat food last Friday.
I am having problem with blood sugar testing. I get blood every time but I am getting error messages (strip error, meter error). I contacted the company yesterday and they will send me testing solution. I have True2go meter. I like it, it does not need too much blood, it's easy to use, so I hope that we will solve the problem soon.
I like your Kitty. What's the bread? And name?
Thanks, Deb, have a nice day. H.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

I am so glad you are doing the raw recipe. I love knowing what my cats are eating and feeling their soft coats.

I've read Dr. Pierson's site so much I feel like it is memorized.

My cats lost weight at first as well. I think it is because they were no longer grazing on dry food in between meals. They did not get dangerously thin though. I would wonder if there isn't something else bothering your kitty.

Are you planning a vet visit?

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Hi Robin,
I was at Dr's office x2 week ago. I am not sure that they are helping her too much. They are stubbornly recommending Hill's MD diet. My plan is figure out that problem with glucose meter, get her base line where her sugar is and continue with Dr. Pierson's diet. I might change the Vet too. I got recommendation. I will pray about it too. Thank you for your concern. By the way your Kitty is Beauty.
Helen.

Kochinka, the beautiful Balinese. She's a tiny girl! My littlest, my civie tortoiseshell Delta, is 7.2 pounds.

Wink is his name. Full name is Wink Wink Nudge Nudge. He's a domestic medium hair. No particular breed, but he does have that beautiful, silky, shiny, medium length hair - even inside his ears! ohmygod_smile He was a mess when I got him from the shelter to foster, but his coat has gotten so much better on the canned food low carb diet instead of the high carb junk they were feeding him. Plus, I get him into remission!

Have you seen these testing tips?

The keys are getting the ear warm to get the blood flowing, maybe trying different lancets for poking 26-28 gauge (for alternate site testing), barely touch the test strip to the blood drop and let the sipping action do it's thing, give a treat always, successful test or not.

Wink loves the freeze dried chicken treats like Pure Bites or Halo Liv-a-Littles.

Do you know what size blood drop that meter needs? Are you getting enough blood but still getting errors?

Maybe if you walk us through your testing procedure, we can make suggestions of different things to try, to improve your success rate.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Oh, thank you, Deb. I will check it out.
I got plenty of blood, I was getting error message meter error or strip error. One time I did not get enough blood and I knew it because I saw it on the strip, blood did not reach the end of the strip.
I think that I will wait for the testing solution to make sure that meter is good. They are bragging about that it's world's smallest meter and I don't need too much of blood. Thank you for all your advices.
Do you know what makes cat's coat beautiful and shiny? She used to be gorgeous, now her coat looks like she is wet. I think due to her weight loss.
She was always hungry despite I fed her a lot of MD diet. I fed her at midnight and I was awake at 5 AM because her stomach was growling. I had to have a rubber band on my kitchen cabinets because she would go through the garbage. I see a positive changes. I think that she is getting more nutrition from my cat food and I don't hear stomach at 5 AM.
I just need to put more weight on her.
Thanks, Deb, it's nice to talking to you. Good night. Helen.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Try testing yourself - could be too much or not enough blood and it means you can practice without turning her into a pin cushion at least until you work out what the issue is ;)

Is she currently getting insulin?

My Tiggy gets dirty under his chin and it looks wet/greasy - that happens when he doesnt clean himself well because he doesnt feel well. Once she is feeling better that will resolve.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Wink's coat was really dull and drab and losing hair while he was unregulated and on the dry high carb food. After I changed him to the low carb wet food and got him regulated, his coat improved dramatically. Nice and soft and silky and shiny.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Thank you all for your comments. I have a Insulin in the refrigerator but she did not get it yet. I am waiting for testing solution to test my meter. I was getting plenty of blood. We"ll see. Kochinka is indoor cat. Her poor coat condition is due to her weight loos, I think. But she loves my cooking! I convinced Fluffy, finally, that my cooking is better for him than the cans. I am looking forward (not) to make 6 lbs of chicken cat food today. But I ordered better grinder so next time it will be easier. I also asked my husband to give me a hand. I am telling my cats: You don't know, how much Mom loves you! It's such a messy process but it's healthy for them.
Thanks Ladies, have a great day. Helen.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

It's Lantus. But I am waiting for testing solution before I give it to her.
By the way we made 6 lbs of chicken food yesterday. I was cutting and chopping and my husband was grinding.
2 hours later we were done! Last week it took me 4 hours. But better grinder is on the way.
Helen.

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Oh, Kochinka is gorgeous! And I love your plant holder. They make such a pair! Wonderful picture.

Sammy's coat was terribly dry and dull when she first started on insulin. She also lost a lot of weight. But her coat became much shinier and softer when she became well regulated on insulin, and she also started gaining weight. It's hard for kitties to gain weight while their FD is unregulated; without sufficient insulin their cells are not able to utilize the nutrients they are consuming. So they are constantly starving, but unable to gain weight.

I hope you're able to get the meter issues worked out soon so Kochinka can start on her path to getting well :-D

Re: I need help to put weight on my cat - Helen the cat love

Hello my Forum friends:
I am sooo happy that I can report that Kochinka gained little over pound in one month! First time in two years! She and Fluffy like my cooking (raw food). Thank you Dr. Lisa Pierson. We still have way to go but she is not wasting away before my eyes, we are on right path. Her vet did not chew my head when I told her about raw diet instead of prescribed Hill's diet. She checked the recipe and said the Kochinka is getting everything she needs. And after reviewing my graphs (curves) she said that Kochinka and me are doing good job.
Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement.
