Bobbie And Bubba

Last night Bubba dropped 217 points from PS @ +4. down to 103. I wasn't sure if he would continue to drop that fast for the next few hours, so I gave him 2/8 can of low carb, checked him in an hour @ +5 and he was about the same, gave another 2/8 can of LC food.( I sizzled out due to extreme fatigue and needed to sleep) What is the probability that he would have continued to drop at that rate? Or a better question, did I over steer him? Probably both stupid questions with Bubba and his lack of transparency. :banghead:

The write up for steering/managing low numbers posted in Lantus would have you feed 1-2 teaspoons of high carb, wait 20-30 minutes and re-test to determine effect, with repeated administration of the 1-2 teaspoons of high carb if below 50 mg/dL on a human glucometer, 68 mg/dL on an AlphaTrak (or a somewhat higher number if you've discovered your cat is really sensitive). You'd want the numbers to get safe, and stable, plus usually past nadir to be sure the numbers would remain safe.
And many of us say better too high for a day than too low for a moment. The latter can kill. Your cat is alive and safe - I consider that a win.

Is the LC food the same as his normal food? If it is, I don't think you did anything wrong. I free feed my kitties, and I know there are others in ProZinc land who give several meals, or leave out food to allow their cats to steer themselves during the day. That is a huge drop in numbers though! I can understand why you would have been a little nervous!

Must agree with @BJM here; no harm done, Bobbie!

As to your question about oversteering: The second round of LC food was probably not really necessary, given that he was maintaining that # an hour later & he was still a good 50+ points away from the "<50 - be careful/start steering" # as relates to BG measurements on human meters. But it's okay, Bobbie; really, you did just fine! That was a pretty darned deep dive (from 320 preshot to 104@ +4); way more than a 50% drop at nadir. So can understand your concern re: whether he might continue to drop even more - particularly because it was an overnight cycle & you really need your rest, too!:) Bubba's been such a puzzle for a while, so is not at all unnatural that you'd feel a little nervous! :bighug:

I too thought you did an awesome job last night. Anytime you can steer with LC food is a win and helps minimize the bounces. I always try to start off with LC food especially if it is near his nadir. However, if it is early in the cycle, I will try to steer with LC food but may hit the MC food or even HC food much quicker and before he hits that 40 or 50 mark. I am doing that this morning (he dropped too fast). I gave him a little more insulin this am (0.2 more) than I normally would but he dropped fast at +3 and +3.5. I gave LC food at +3 but he dropped too much in the next 30 minutes so I started giving MC food at +3.5 just because I really needed to slow him down even though he was only at 67. So much for hoping to get some outside work done before the football games today.

Thanks Robin for the reassurance. And thanks for the explanation about the second round of LC food @+5. I debated a bit about that serving since it was only +5. Next time I'll let him hang and check him an hour later again. How's the Bat-Bat doing? Did you see we have a newbie named Tim-Tim?

These cats have radar to know when is the worst possible time to do a dive on us. Thanks for weighing in Cindi, I appreciate everyone's opinions a lot. Hope you get your yard work done before the game.

Yes, the LC was Low carb, his regular food. He's such a puzzle, nadir changes constantly, sometimes a big drop, sometimes a slow flat cycle, sometimes bounces for days, other times not...........How Samir doing?

Did you see we have a newbie named Tim-Tim?
No, hadn't seen that. Cute name! Which thread?
How's the Bat-Bat doing?
Oh, you know, Bobbie ... same old, same old! Just dropped her dinky-dose a little, as she nadired last night with a bit more than a 50% drop; am getting kind of frustrated with these teeny-tiny doses. Sometimes I don't even know if they're making a dent ... but every time I try raising her to around 0.20, it appears she ends up mini-bouncing. Ugh, just wish she'd "(you-know-what) or get off the pot!" :banghead:

Oh gosh, I can only imagine how frustrating it is to be soooooo close. I guess with such micro dosing there isn't anything in-between.....Does she know she's causing you angst? Tim-Tim's mom, Tami posted in "Another newbie...unfortunately" Her member name is Talrcat.
