Vet said to hold Smokie's food 3-4 hours before i bring her in for labwork.
She will have GAS as an anesthetic because she has to be asleep for exam as she is
a fractious kitty and that is the only way he will see her.

For how long do you hold food for anesthesia? I don't know how much gas he will give her.
Thanks

Well, when I took Vinnie in last Friday I had no idea how he would react to anyone so the possibility was there that they would have to sedate him. I was told the last food he could have would be 3 a.m. the night before and his appointment was for 1 p.m. the following day.

Hi Maryjo,

Are you taking Smokie in today, Wednesday, March 31st? Is this the vet who will use the box to put her in to give the gas to her?

I think the time frame that Hope has given to you is probably better than just withholding food for 3 or 4 hours. If Smokie should get nauseous from the gas, etc., it would be best not to have too much food in her system, at least that is the way I understand their reasoning.

Hope you do well with Smokie at the vet's and please keep us posted what tests she has done, and her results. Don't forget to make sure to ask for a copy of any and all lab work results, or any other tests they do. Sometimes the vets get so busy that they don't always pick up on certain things that might show up on bloodwork, or other tests. I had that happen recently with my Ketchie.

Hang in there, as I know how worried you are about poor Smokie being so afraid of the vet's.

I agree with Hope, too. It is usually about 12 hours. As Jean said it is due to having food. in their gut. If they regurgitate while under and too much food comes up they can aspirate and/or choke. Not something a vet or tech wants to deal with at a fragile time with your kitty. If you have not brought Smokie in yet I would double check this with your vet to understand it properly.

Good luck on test day

Agree - and no shot in the morning before the procedure unless your kitty is prone to ketones -- then approach with caution.

Norton Hypo'd once coming out of anesthesia -- had to get IV glucose
