Hey everyone, I got blood from Perkin tonight, this is really only the 3rd time in a year I could get it, he hasn't been eating as much as normal and seems tired so I had to go for it and try to get blood. At 11:15 am I gave him about 2 units of levemir. Tonight he ate DM dry at 9:00pm and not too much. At 11:20 Pm tonight I got blood and used a Relion Micro meter he sugar was 186 the first time and there was enough blood to get a second reading which was 202. Now this blood sugar is right before he would need his next shot so I am assuming this is pretty good. But Perkins is not eating as much and just isn't as active as normal.

As a stand alone PS number, that is a good number but without any data I am not sure how much more input we'll be able to provide. Are you testing for ketones? How are his teeth? Potty habits?

Congrats. Those first few blood samples and insulin doses can be challenging. We will need some more data like Yong said.

Anyhow it is kind of exhilarating to be successful on these new steps. Kudos to you for taking care of your sugar kitteh.

Yeah I did test for Ketones but it is hard to tell, the color is in-between no ketons and slight. I did post his blood work last year he had high white blood cells and the dr didn't know why. He is having a little diarrhea. He is starting to refuse the DM so tomorrow I am going to get him just the S/O food, right now he only wants temptations cat treats. He has a history of being blocked so I have to be careful he has to have a S/O complex food. I'll have to worry about the diabetes second to blocking and not eat and going into liver failure. Everyone please keep Perkins in your prayers.

One thing that can help kitties prone to urinary issues is to add extra water to every wet food meal to make a sort of stew.

I used to have to worry about blockages with Zeke a couple years before he was DX diabetes. We were even at the vet twice in one month because of it. The wet food diet is actually very good for that. So you shouldn't have to worry too much on the blockage part once you have him on a strictly wet diet. And like Kris said, you can add extra water to the food to help even more. When they are eating a lot of dry foods, it concentrates the urine along with the bad things that causes the blockages since they aren't getting as much water as they should. Of course it is also very important that your kitty is eating. Even if it isn't the lowest of carbs, try finding him some wet foods that he likes. Though the carbs won't be ideal for a diabetic, they would be much lower then most the dry foods and temptations treats. Then once he is eating better and has more accepted the wet food diet, then start working on getting him to the lower carb foods. Our Zeke used to hate the wet food too which is where we learned about tuna being an awesome bribe. Now he actually prefers his low carb pate over anything else we give him. Luckily he will lick the gravy off the MC and HC when we have to steer his numbers or we would be having some issues. :smuggrin:

Meridith that's a good idea, tonight I will just give him our other cat's regular wet food, I'm sure he will like that.

Great to hear. That will go a long ways towards helping his diabetes and blockages. We fed food for urinary tract health til we started the wet. I will tag others that are better at helping with dosing so if u need to adjust ur dose with lowering his carb intake.

@Yong @Kris & Teasel @JanetNJ

I won't be around for a few days. Have to go out of town. But I think even Kris and Janet will also require some data before we're able to give any dosing advice. The immediate concern for Perkins is to get him to eat so he doesn't get hepatic lipidosis and to get some extra fluids in him so he doesn't get blocked. Elena will have to try her best to get a daily testing routine down for any thing further though. :bighug:

Good idea. I also add extra water bowls around the house. One of my cats was getting UTI'S every year until I added three extra water sources. There are now two Fountains and two bowls throughout the house and she hasn't had a problem in over two years. Turns out she just didn't drink enough. I also add water to all their meals

Cosequine for arthritis can help prevent urinary problems as well.

Yes, we're here to help. I agree with Yong that eating is top priority right now. You might have to try plain meat in broth baby food (no seasonings, onion, etc.) and, if needed, this is easier to syringe into him.

Our 3 kittehs mostly get Fancy Feast classics. Essentially diabetic food. I mix in sufficient water each time - and it becomes quite mushy.
