My 14 year old male kitty Teddy diagnosed with diabetes. Now on 1 unit Lanus 2x per day. Did my first home sugar curve today and was successful over 9 hour period. Using ReliOn Micro glucose tester & strips and Bayer Acscensia lancets. Got many good tips from this site about home sugar testing. My vet is supportive and great about care of diabetic kitties. I live in South Bay Los Angeles. Teddy cat eating Fancy Feast. Thank you. - Mary Pat confused_cat

Hi Mary,
Not too much traffic this late at night, and I'm sure that tomorrow you'll get plenty of "welcomes", but I'm glad to be the first!

Looks like you have already done some reading?
You are home testing! Great!
You are using a great insulin and the starting dose sounds perfect.
And you are feeding low carb canned food.
You have all the "newbie" starting things covered already!

Just a couple of questions:
How much does Teddy weigh? Does he have any other conditions outside of the diabetes?
Do you know what sort of blood glucose number he had when he was diagnosed, and can you let us know what sort of numbers you got doing the curve today?
What was he eating before he was diagnosed?
Has he ever gotten steroids for any illness, or had any illness prior to now?

Oh, I know we have several members in S. California, so you are not alone.

Please ask any questions that come up. We have members all over the world, so somebody is usually online around the clock. A couple of folks from Europe tend to come on around this time of night.

Again, welcome to the board!

you are lucky!!! sounds like you are in great hands and have a great vet to help you out!!! so invaluable. Looks like you are doing everything right! Good luck!

Sounds good so far. Is there anything else we can do to help? Remember someone is always around and you will get answers. We are a very good support system.

Welcome to the group.

What questions do you have? Someone here will likely have an answer, or an experience to share.

Just wanted to stop in and say hi and welcome to the board from another so cal member! I'm out in Riverside County and work in Orange County but I can think of at least one other member that's right there in your area. I almost wonder if you use the same vet as her because they've got you doing all the right things :-)

Hi there. I also live in the South Bay. My diabetic cat, Spader, passed away three years ago, but had a great last three years thanks to this site. I go to Animal Medical Group in Manhattan Beach.

This is a great site!
