We just found out yesterday that our 10 year old cat is a diabetic. They want us to give her Vetsulin twice a day. It's 1unit every 12 hours. She has been eating wet food for about a year now but I'm not sure if it's the right food for a diabetic cat now. I want her to eat the correct food for her & she is over weight. She has lost 1 pound but they would like for her to loos a pound in a half to 2 pounds more. She is strictly an indoor cat. And is their any places to buy her insulin or syringes that is cheaper. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance kristie
How is everything going now?

She is taking her shots way better. I just give her the shot while eating & she is good with it. I still think her insulin is not right. Meaning the dose. She still seems to be peeing a lot. She will not let me check her levels. So I'm not sure where she is at.

I'm glad you are at least consistently getting the shots in. In the beginning I used to have to test while my cat ate.... So is give her some chicken or cold cuts and do it then. Eventually she made good associations. What is the dose you're giving?

She is still on 1cc twice a day. But I'm sure she is due for the vet to check her. I think she needs to go up a little. And she seems to be hungry more. Or I think she is. Trying to get an in house cat to loose weight that is a diabetic is so hard. She acts like you are starving her, haha

Hi Kristie,
I'm just going to give you all the "new member" links in one place. :).
Setting up your Signature is super helpful for a quick glance and for those of us with bad memories: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/editing-your-signature-profile-and-preferences.130340/

If her BG is still not controlled her body is literally starving because it can't properly absorb nutrients from the food. Uncontrolled diabetes makes the cells "lock their doors" from nutrients. Insulin, at the individual proper dose, therapy provides the "key" to let nutrients in. Has she been on 1.0U since December?

She may be building up some glucose toxicity from being on the same dose for so long. Also, may explain the reason her symptoms have not improved much since diagnosis.
