Hello all! Mot sure if there are any of my old timers still here to help, but I know all yinz will chime in with advice for me, well my Sonnie is a rescue I adopted a year after my Garth passed. Garth was my sugar boy, plus he had crf, we managed them well, until bone cancer took him 3 years ago. Sonnie been with me 2 years, he is an old gent, but loverboy, he has been on a wet low crb diet since I brought him home. I started noticing the p's were not right, especially urine out put, and excessive drinking, being he is older, I thinking crf, made a vet apt tomorrow to get bloodwork, I do get him panels yearly, his last set was 8 months ago all was good. something made me check his numbers tonight, to my surprise 329!! so I waited 6 hrs 349!! I also a diabetic so I used my meter and numbers were the same. now I am a newbie, cuz I have no experience with the insulins today. I was a pzi vet girl and loved it. So please be patient with me, it gonna take some time to get pzi out of the brain. I look forward to my journey with everyone and look forward to making great friends as I have here, I have made some amazing friends all over the world here. hugs to everyone , I gonna start a curve in the am, pray we have no underlying issues.

Francine and Sonnie (Garth, GA)

Welcome back!

ProZinc is available in the US as a U-40 insulin and should behave similarly to the PZI.
Lantus & Levemir are going to be different as they are depot insulins and the effects overlap from shot to shot.

You still test before shooting, and you test around +6 to see how the nadir is doing.

If you look in the Lantus forum, there are a number of stickie posts on the use of Lantus.

Hi Francine, been a long tine friend. I use BCP-PZI from BCP Vet Pharmacy. They do U-40, U-50 and U-100. I use the U-40 with the conversion chart and a U100 syringe. Hope Sonnie does well for you. It'll all come back to you in a heartbeat :-D

Welcome back! Nice to meet ya! Looking forward to getting to know you and Sonnie Boy!
I'm sure that its like riding a bicycle and you will feel like you never left.

Welcome back! Lots of new members here to welcome you and some oldtimers too.

You've already got the experience from one sugarcat under your belt so you have the low carb diet down pat already I see.

We've certainly made strides since you were last here in the insulins that we use. PZI is still available but the new insulins on the block are Lantus and Levimir like BJM said. Sometimes, I think the PZI/Prozinc are easier to use and more flexible with peoples busy work and life schedules. If you still want to use PZI, no need to 'get pzi out of the brain' if you don't want to.

Nice slide show from the folks at the University of Queensland talking about what is new and the different insulins. http://www.uq.edu.au/vetschool/content/clinic-stlucia/feline-dm.pdf You might want to give this a look see to help you on your decision of what insulin to use.

We've entered the google age and keep a spreadsheet and profile over in our google accounts in the drive folder/tab.

No rush, when you get to it.

just as I would expect open arms:)) I never left the board, I just had no experience with the new insulins and how they processed, I had quite a few health issues as some know, and I not the sharp wipper snapper I was with Garth, but I not afraid of this disease, it will not beat me, I too was dx in Dec a diabetic, my delemia is insulin choice. I know pzi and how it worked in Garth, but each cat is different, I dont havemuch time to decide, but if my vet doesnt have pzi on hand today then I go with lantus or Lev. I just pray there are no underlying issues, his eye is swollen shut, there is no cuts or broken skin, looks like something is behind eyeball pushing it. I started eye AB yesterday, but eye is not red and no discharge. keep fingers crossed please. Nice to see your still here Hope and Baby, look forward to all your guidance once again:)))

Hi Francine.
Sorry you have a sick kitty. Hoping that eye heals up. Did they do any blood work ?
Did the eye thing happen at the same time his numbers shot up ? Or in the same general time frame ?
Wondering if this is a case of infection driving the BG. If so, take care of the infection and you might not have a true sugar kitty.
How's the mouth look ? Sometimes dental issues can cause an eye to swell. I'm sure you remember how much infected teeth can affect BG. Please have the vet check that possibility out.

Keep us posted.

Nice to "see" you !

PS I used lantus w/ Winnie and liked it. I know Dian has had success w/ lev. Have you spoken w/ her ?

Hi Cheryl!! glad to see you too! yes I talked with Dian, his teeth need cleaned, could be the infection, but he been in the 400's but you could be right, ECID. I chose prozinc, I knew pzi so well, I. got him out of thr threes and he sat in 200 most day of what I tedted then pmps was 321, we are lower, I want to wait till infection clears to get a bit more agressive, plus gotta get my feet wet again, it been 3 yrs since Garth passed. any advice helps my friend:))
