Hypoglycemic episode

I don't know what happenned, he received his usual dose which is 2U. I just check his BG as usual and is in 61, he hasn't show any symptoms but I decided to bring him some of the RC dry food which is high in carbs. Should I be worried??
 
Yes, it is a concern. 61 is too low on an AlphaTrak for any of the insulins.
Can you take another test now?
Do you have honey, corn syrup, maple syrup in the house?
Do you have plenty of strips for the AlphaTrak.

I waited 15 minutes to take another test and his BG is now 76, I notice he's taking more water than usual, perhaps because his bg is rising. Should I continue to test him??

How many is a couple of strips? Very important.

I'd like to see Tabby above 90 (and staying above 90). I know that Vetsulin hits fast and hard but it is only 4+ hours into the cycle.

For now, feed a couple of pieces of the kibble if you don't have any honey or karo to put on top of the regular Tiki food.

I think I have around 30 strips left, I will follow your advice about giving him the kibbles with his regular food, any changes that occur I will let you know!
 
In case I get pulled away by my doctor's appointment:

Do another test 30 minutes after your last test. It takes longer for dry food to enter the system than it does for honey or karo.

If Tabby's numbers are above 90, feed a tsp of his regular Tiki. (You don't want to fill him up because you need to be able to feed him later if his numbers drop dangerously low.) And test again in 30 minutes.

If his numbers are staying about the same, feed a tsp of the Tiki. And test again in 30 minutes.

If his numbers are starting to go down but above 68, feed a tsp of Tiki. And test again in 30 minutes.

If numbers are below 68, pull out the kibble and give him a tsp or two of that.

Got it! I just gave him some kibbles along with his usual food and now I'll wait the 30 minutes. I hope his bg stabilizes. In addition to what happens to him, I have noticed that he has been constipated these last days, I doubt it is because of his current food, I think I will end up taking him to the vet tomorrow for a check-up.
 
What are Tabby's numbers now?

And can you fill in the numbers on the spreadsheet? It is the first place anyone trying to help will look.
 
Hi I am here. Do me a favor and get a second d test. Anytime you get a strange unexpected number it's good to retest to make sure it's accurate
 
AlphaTrak strips are crazy expensive and in a low numbers situation you will go through more strips than you can even imagine. It is recommended to have at least 100 strips as a back-up. It's not like you can run out in the middle of the night and buy more.

Have you thought about switching to a human meter? (I'm not sure how expensive human meter strips are in Puerto Rico – waving hello from Canada.)

93 is wonderful. No more feeding. Just keep an eye out. :). Great job steering him up. Let him surf in the nice healing green numbers. Don't be surprised if he bounces up a bit later since he's not really used to these lows.
 
He should be reduced to 1.75 going forward.... This may have been an anomaly though, so if you find the 1.75 isn't enough after a few days you could go back to 2.

I am aware of how expensive alphatrack strips are, i decided to use it because i feel more confident obtaining more accurate results

I have thought about it but I would like to understand first how much is the difference in the results between the pet glucometer and the human glucometer...

I'm happy that he is in safer numbers, I hope he continues to obtain this range of numbers in the future (not very low of course). I will be very vigilant the rest of the day.

Sorry for asking this, but how much would 1.75 be in a U40 syringe? I know the type of syringe I have has 1/2 marks...

I love my alpha. Used it for almost 5 years. I saved money getting alpha and other freestyle strips for it on eBay. I would buy them every time I got a deal. Usually paid $15-18 for 50. When my cc died I gave away about 20 vials to people. I always had a nice stockpile.

So you would go half way between the 1.5 and the 2. Just eyeball it. Unfortunately none of the syringes have quarter markings. Don't be sorry for asking questions. I'm always happy to help if I can.
 
It just a matter of personal preference on which meter to use. Many of us were using human meters long before pet meters were even thought of. The important thing is to test using the same meter each time to avoid inaccuracies.

You may want to consider having a backup meter in case you do not have enough strips for the Alphatrack in an emergency. If you are in the US the Walmart Relion brand meters are inexpensive and very good meters.

In case he have a bouncing effect tonight, should I stick with the 2 units?

After what happened today, I will consider it :). I'm afraid that I won't be able to pay regularly for the alphatrak strips because I'm a college student and my parents won't be able to pay for them regularly either... so I should have a backup meter.

If you have a Walmart in Puerto Rico buy the human meter
The Relion Prime it's 9 dollars of The Relion Ptemier
17.88 for 100 test strips
At least you can run into the store when you need test strips, you should always have at least 100 on hand.
I'm sure Walmart ships pretty fast also

Great , I'm glad there are Walmarts there, no need to put a code in like the alpha trak
just set it up then put the strip in and your ready to go

Ijust checked his amps and it's at 514! I hope that the Vetsulin manages to lower that number enough... Does the bouncing effect usually takes a long time to control?

The usually clear in 1-3 cycles (12 hour periods)
