I noticed Marvin peeing a bit more the past couple days and when checking his BG level on AlphaTrak3 this morning it was exceptionally high- over 700. He's basically hyperglycemic. I don't understand why. Just this past Monday we upped his Vetsulin to 4units per vet recommendation. Now I'm a bit panicked. I'd not seen a spike or bounce like this in him since we've started his diabetic journey.

Aiming to call the vet. He had a gastroenteritis event about 2 weeks ago so we're trying to get a handle on his diet once again. The only additional 'snack' he's had the past couple of days was Hills Gluco Support m/d food. I'm guessing this is having a very bad affect on him. The fiber content has helped him produce great stools and even allowed us to stop giving him Miralax supplement (which was the likely cause of his gastroenteritis)

Hi Jeff! Sorry nobody has gotten back to you yet! Do you have our spreadsheet to record Marvin's numbers on? It's one of our most valuable tools and we really need to see it before we can give much in the way of helpful advice.

It would also help to get your "Signature" done. It answers a lot of the questions we might need answers to without wasting time asking them every time.

I'm concerned that your dose may be too high. 4 units of Vetsulin is a very high dose and Vetsulin hasn't been recommended for cats in several years because it tends to hit hard and fast and then wear off before the next shot is due. Many vets tend to treat their feline diabetics like canine diabetics and it just doesn't work that way. They also see a lot more diabetic dogs than cats and it seems they just use what they're used to instead of what's best for the cat.

Also, yeah, the M/D is about 15% carbs and if he's carb sensitive, that's enough to cause a rise in his blood glucose.

This is where having a spreadsheet would REALLY help us. Sometimes something that happened several cycles ago can have an impact later.

You can add fiber to his regular low carb food. We have people who use psyllium husk or unflavored Metamucil (always check ingredients for any types of sugars) to add that extra fiber.

Has your vet tested him for pancreatitis? Some of what's going on are indications so if they haven't, you should ask for one the next time you take him in. There's a "Snap" fPL test they can do in the office, but it's not very sensitive. You want to have them run the Spec fPL (which usually needs to be sent out to a lab)

It kind of seems like your vet may not be too familiar with the differences in treatments between dogs and cats. They may be a great vet otherwise, but we've had many members who've had to change to find a vet more familiar with proper treatment protocols for cats.

I've recorded one BG curve, and then sporadic testing at other times, and I can fit that into a spreadsheet but I don't know how helpful my information can be without regular testing.

I understand. It's all pretty overwhelming, but even if you can only get sporadic tests, it may help us. It looks a lot more complicated than it really is once you understand it.

Of course you don't have as much data as a lot of us here. We've been here a lot longer!
