I just now noticed that Ares has ONE nail front paw that is HUGE and growing into his paw!!! I tried to clip it and he is absolutely in pain about it...but i never noticed it because all his others are completely fine and this one is just HUGE! he never acted like anything was hurting him(of course) but wow...he tried to bite me when i tried to clip it!
Never ever has he done that!
Ieill be taking him to vet tomorrow if i cannot clip tonight!

But anyone know what in the heck and why? just ONE claw??

Oh no, poor bub, that must be so painful! Were you able to clip it in the end? I follow a cat groomer on instagram who sees those pretty often, cats are so stoic about it that their caregivers sometimes don't find out until it's gotten pretty bad.

I have noticed as my cats have gotten older (they are 15-16 and I have seen it over the past two years) that some of their nails can get super thick, stay very blunt and tend to curve more. I think it's because they don't use the scratcher as much, and therefore the outer layer of the nail doesn't shed like it's supposed to. Once a week when I clip their nails, I also make sure to peel off the outer layer if the nail looks thick. It's very satisfying, but does require a cat who's okay with you messing with their paws. Mine are angels about it but I know a lot of cats don't take kindly to it.

Hope you were able to trim the nail - washing the paw with gentle soap and water would probably be a good thing until you can get him to the vet and determine if he needs antibiotics.

Thank you for this info.
Unfortunately, i tried 2x by myself and we set up a huge disinfected area for my husband to clip while i held him. it sucked and 3x we tried with hubby.
im so sad. he is licking and limping slightly...but he is acting like he still loves us.
i said we r done. I will take him to vet as soon as i can.
:nailbiting::blackeye::(:(

i feel like he grew a stress nail. other times he was stressed bad, he gained over 2 lbs in 3 days (i know that is hard to believe, but i watched this happened with my own eyes!)
Next time he got stressed out, he went over the edge and his diabetes went into full mode and the he began LOSING weight like crazy. it took me a LONG time to realize he wasnt just naturally losing weight and getting old, he had the diabetes....and by that time..now he is on insulin for likely forever.

all this to say, his body responds to stress pretty bad. Hence, he grew a stress nail????

its been over 1 month since having Sophie and August (rescued cats from Aunt's house) and before that the ferals....i couldn't even believe that he was as OK as he was.
im saying I believe this was brought on by stress amd he is 13, so......my poor dude.:arghh: He is my heart.

I will definitely be on his nails MUCH more and peeling is such a good idea! Now i need to look at Sophie's! She is 16!

Thank you for your reply and helping :bighug:

I'm sorry he didn't let you clip it... it must be quite painful, I'm sure any cat would put up a fight. The vet will be able to clip all his nails short, and hopefully it's not infected and he doesn't need further treatment.
I freaked out the first time I saw this on one of my older ladies - couldn't fathom why she had those giant blunt nails and it looked so weird :nailbiting:
Now that you know what to watch out for, it'll be much easier to prevent it. Best of luck, and keep us posted!! :bighug:

yes! hopefully i can keep this in check.

have a great night!

Boy oh boy Ash if it's not one thing it's another, Poor Ares, I hope you can get him to the vet soon and get it taken care of. Keep us posted. :bighug::bighug::cat:

Thanks D. I will definitely keep it updated on Lantus board. So freaking weird....its like i get calm then...bamm! I think im beginning to get used to my heart jumping. only, i hat that ares is in pain. I REALLY REALLY HATE that!
Cant believe he let me get a test after all that. He is such a good dude and doesn't deserve any pain!!

Cracker had one like that. It was too close to his pad that I decided to have the vet cut it back. Once you have it trimmed I suggest checking it monthly to keep it trimmed at a shorter length

What type of clipper are you using? If it is one of those with a vee-groove there might not be enough room to get the nail in the groove and you might have to the side a human arc-cut clipper are a small diagonal clipper like

Ill be doing that from now on Lisa, thank you!

Larry, I noticed right away that kitty clippers would not be big enough. I disinfected our mini snips (im sure the exact size in ur pic) and we still didn't get it...he flips out and we get scared we r hurting him, even tho we r nowhere even CLOSE to near the thick of his nail!

i think what is causing the pain is not the nail clip, it is the movement in the part that is stuck in his paw :arghh: He is being an angel right now, bit in still afraid to touch his paw. :(

Thanks Larry for responding and posting pics!! :bighug::bighug:

Do you have any gabapentin or other pain met you can use so the cat reacts less with trying to cut the ingrown nail? A lidocaine injection in the area/paw pad would be ideal. Even if done by vet it will not be pleasant for Ares. To me it is strange that it is in from paw? I had old cat who had ingrown nail in rear paw. I only noticed it she walked with a clicking sound across the wood floor, like tap dancing.

I have human gabapentin, no lidocaine. last night i gave him 2 CBD snacks that are calming and for pain...it still hurt him big time!
seems like everytime i ask any vet for something for my cat's pain, im denied....dunno why. I wish i had all kinds of backup pain meds for him!
Im so sick of these vets:arghh:
pay them arm and leg and they do NOTHING i need them to:banghead:

i mean guys, this is really deep!
i have no idea how this could happen right in front of me! and i mess with his paws all the time also i clip his nails when i hear clicks on the kitchen floor...didnt hear anything and still dont!!!
ill put pics up, u can see that it is just ONEon his front leftpaw...his middle finger flipping me off!!!

I have human gabapentin,
I suspect those are capsules. If you can an divide one based on looking into 100mg portions. Then fill a #3 gelcap w/100mg and administer to the cat. 1-2 hours later the cat should be somewhat sedated. Once removed the entry point has to be cleaned and maybe a round of oral antibiotics given.
From the photo yours is bad. For my Nether, there was no open wound with the intact nail. One removed the puncture did bleed. This was maybe 40 years or so ago so I do not remember if antibiotics were prescribed.

omfg jesus #$%

those pics....my wife and I were wide-eyed. I looked then turned away. :stop:

My wife does the nail clipping in our house, she said one of our cats had one that was curling over and would have ended up like that if she had not clipped it when she did

So sorry to hear your poor kitty is hurting like that!! I had no idea this was a thing that could happen with older kitties. Thank you for sharing this awful horrible no-good-very-bad experience, I am sorry you had to go through it but grateful to learn about it so we can do our best to prevent it.

Rover had this nail problem. It was impossible to keep up with. They grew so fast.

First of all, the trick to cutting a cat's claws is seduction. Loads of seduction. Massive brushing and petting that makes a cat melt, all leading up to the moment when you have a go at cutting nails. It may take more than one seduction.

Rover had very thick claws and brittle. If I could not get the clippers under the nail, I would use the side edge of the clipper and nip away gently at one side of the nail and then the other as close to the tip as I could get. The outer sheath would eventually start to come away. Sometimes that was all that was needed to free the nail. Sometimes I would have to clip a tiny bit more of the sides. But do make sure to keep as close to the tip as you can. You don't want to cut the quick.

i dont have any issues clipping Ares's nails. and all his others are completely normal.
so odd its just this one and he only is giving me a hard time because he is in pain. I will definitely be keeping up on it! wont let it get mear this long!
And ya Red, it must have been pretty quick! and grown like that within this past month because i believe last clipping was about 4 weeks ago. I had alot going on this past month!
we just got to a somewhat calmer spot in our lives and i was able to go back to loads of cuddles with him, hes my best bud, and i noticed it!
I can't believe its so deep :(

Calling vet in AM to get him in. I cant pull that put, im glad we didn't because it looks like he might bleed alot! he will need antibiotics and im going to beg her for a pain killer. hopefully a shot.
