Hi - Jett and I are new to this forum and diabetes. Would loud howling be a symptom of diabetes? He has been howling very loudly.

I am trying to get to the bottom of why Jett's BG has suddenly spiked to 650. He has no ketones in his urine, and he has been acting like he feels better today after fluids, B12, and insulin. I am suspecting pancreatitis, which I am reading can be painful, which took me back to his howling episodes. I noticed today that he howled prior to peeing and then afterwards. I have seen this behavior before and thought it was a dominant kitty thing. Is there a way to test for pancreatitis? If BG is high due to pancreatitis, what needs to be done? Do you proceed with insulin treatment as if it were diabetes? It seems like this is the approach of the vet, but I haven't connected how this helps the pancreas. Thanks for your help!

My cat Boo will often howl about an hour after getting insulin and run around the house full of energy. He also used todo this often at 2-3 am almost as a routine before he was diabetic. For Boo anyway, I'm thinking its just him letting loose.

Billy does the same darn thing, but my husband and I swear he says "hello" or "uh-oh" when he does it.... at four in the morning.....

It reallyis peculiar but with Billy, he has sone it since six months of age. I always thought of it more like a toidy-box battle-cry, as Billy has to scoop and whip most of the litter out of the box after he goes, resembles a warzone.

Is it a new behavior or an old one?

Howling before and after peeing plus the spike in blood sugar would make me suspect a urinary tract infection.

For Squeaker it turned out to be a thyroid issue. So just to be safe I would suggest a thyroid panel.
My old cat (diabetic in remission) howled loudly as well, - especially at night, prior to being diagnosed with hyperthyroid. It's just occured to be that he hardly does this now.

Squeaker actually developed Euthyroid sickness. He could produce enough T4 but his system couldn't maintain a steady level of free T4. When he was put on a thyroid boost, his howling at night ceased.
