Hello, what is the best procedure when your cat throws up their meal at shot time? Test again a little later and feed again? He threw up a lot, otherwise seems fine. He usually does not puke, but guess he ate more quickly than usual. Thank you for your advice!

I think I'd skip the shot and monitor to see if he throws up again, try and feed him again a bit later too, it could be a sign of something and you don't wanna shoot on an 'empty stomach' regardless - Have you been able to check your guy for ketones at all? Those high #s worry me, and skipping a dose is never a good thing IF ketones are a factor.

If you decide to check for ketones you can use a Precision Xtra blood monitor & test strips, which costs about $30 for meter + $30 for 10 strips, or buy ketostix at the pharmacy which are cheaper but you have to test using urine. Always a good idea to check for ketones with a high BG cat.

I had already given him his shot, I test, shoot, feed. I did give him some more food, worried about having an empty stomach. He seems fine, just hungry, since I didn't give him a full meal. I will check his numbers again at +2. I do test for ketones, so far negative, thank goodness. Thank you for your help!

I refeed and if they eat normally, keep it down, and act normally I shot full dose. My Badger does that occasionally.
I gave him a little more food, not as much as original amount. He is keeping that down so far and seems fine. I will test his BG now and see where he is at. I test/feed/shoot , he eats part of meal while I shoot, helps keep him occupied. Thank you!

Sounds good - for some reason I thought you were asking if you should shoot or not. Good job on testing for ketones already!

Thanks John or Alison, or both! I probably didn't make that very clear. He seems to be fine now, just hungry, but that is normal! lol I retested him and he didn't drop too low. He has only thrown up one other time, so I wasn't sure how to proceed. Thank you very much for your help! :bighug:

Better to test, feed, then inject. :)

.
Guess that makes sense, in case they do hurl! I do like to give some food while shooting, otherwise he wants to wiggle too much. So, in future I will feed and get the shot in at the end. Or do you wait a bit? Sheesh, thought I had this figured out at least! lol  Thanks, Mogs!
