How to make the best raw food for my CKD cats? Or where to find best info

To put it short, I want to restart making raw food, and I want it to have the best taste and best nutrition.

Hi all, in 2020 I start to make raw food using Lisa Pierson's recipe with the modification of replacing bones with egg shell powder, as that time Fafa had mild CKD and I was told egg shell powder has enough calcium and less phosphorus. Within 2 months Fafa's bloodwork gives very good value so she did not identify with CKD anymore.

In 2021, my family reported that the cats do not have a good appetite to eat raw food, they think it is because the smell of eggshell powder is strong. (I doubt that I think it is because of many factors) Then they switch back to the combination of canned food+cooked chicken thigh. (I should not let that happen but the stress of life made me not have the energy to deal with that)

So now, the bloodwork of last week shows that Fafa has mild CKD and hyperthyroidism, and Tiger has mild CKD, I want to restart making raw food, and I want it to have the best taste and best nutrition. I wonder if Lisa Pierson's recipe is not the best because it does not seem attractive enough for cats, and her posts are old which may mean there may be some better way now. So I may want some new recipes.

The taste (or smell) is very important because I need to stimulate their appetite to ensure their food intake and at the same time protect them from CKD. (it seems that food doesn't do much with hyperthyroidism, is it? Fafa is going to start her treatment of hyperthyroidism, I prefer to switch food first and then start treatment)

How to do that? Or is there any recommended information source for that? I browsed several Facebook groups and websites but I am not sure if I am finding the best info.

I use egg shell powder and I don’t think it smells at all. It is a very good substitute for bone.
I would trust Lisa Pearsons recipes.
This is the best site you will find for CRD kitties Peter

Yes, I was once active in their community, and may now I should be active here again.

The fact is the cats eating less and less raw food from Lisa Pearson's recipe. If I follow my old recipe, it may not be good enough, so I may need to find ways to enhance the taste or smell. I think one reason the cat doesn't eat the raw is that the food was kept in the freezer for weeks, the cold may also take away the good smell. So maybe now I need to have my family make the food by the time cat wants to eat. So the cats can eat newly made food.

Do you mean the food is made and hen kept in the fridge or the freezer.?

Hi Bron,

I see your CKD recipe here. My question is if I want to make new meals the moment the cats eat, do I need to sprinkle the Supplement Recipe (which is the 5 ml solution) into the meat? Do the cats like it?

Also, I have no access to kangaroo meat, can I just use a chicken drum stick?

No I didn’t get it sorry. he’s it is fine to use chicken drumstick meat.
Sheba used to eat the food with the supplements in it. The vitamin B is quite strong though….maybe start off with 1/2 the B vitamin and then gradually increase it to what the recipe says. Mix it into the meat.
Don’t forget the egg shell powder.

Foods that are high in phosphorus such as egg yoke, kidney and heart should be limited to small amounts for a CRD cat.

I can get the cat to eat the vitamin B by putting the vitamin B powder into the fish oil and have them lick it.

When you say mix it into the meat do you mean just sprinkle the supplement that is in the pre-made water on the drumstick?

Sorry I need more help, recently my head is not that clear

I have few questions:

Q1: I find that chicken thigh has higher amount of fat than chicken drumstick. (100 gram including skin = 14.3g vs 9.7g) Do you think it would be better for CKD cats? For the phos level I am still researching but I guess there won't be big difference.

Q2: In the supplement recipe, you mentioned 3 x fish oil capsule, but capsules can have different size, concentration, and type of fish oil, what exactly do you mean?

Q3: Is there any reason that you prefer ESP over calcium carbonate supplement?

Q4: You mentioned: "1 small piece liver about the size of 2 smarties", could you give approx weight of that?

Q5: Why do you give pinch of taurine when there is already taurine in raw meat? Is that just for insurance?

Q6: Why do you add Silppery Elm Bark Powder? Is that suitable for my cats?

Q7: In catinfo.org, it is said that salt with iodine needed to be added, but you don't see it in your recipe, is there a reason?

Chicken thigh meat which is a darker meat has less phosphorous. Not sure about the fat

I just find it easier to source as I make my own ESP

You mentioned: "1 small piece liver about the size of 2 smarties", could you give approx weight of that?
About 5-7 grams per day. It needs to be 5% of the daily meat content.

Yes, Once the meat is cut up it can lose some taurine.
Why do you add Silppery Elm Bark Powder? Is that suitable for my cats?
I used it as it is good for digestion. You don't have to use it

I couldn't access it but if you can then use it

Do you mean you could not access salt with iodine? Isn't salt essential?
Oh I just remember that Fafa has hyperthyroid, maybe I should not use iodized salt, do you agree?
