How to know when to skip shot

Hello,

I’m sorry if this has been asked a lot, but I searched and wasn’t certain if I found the answer. Our Toki was diagnosed at the end of July. He’s on Vetsulin-2u every 12 hours. His blood sugar has come down a lot and has been under 200 the last few days. I posted in the Facebook group and here and I think I’ve gotten the impression that we shouldn’t give shots when it’s under 200. I also looked through the Health FAQ and I think what I read said the same thing. I’m still trying to understand all the new lingo and terms. His spreadsheet is up to date-there aren’t many mid cycle readings-were working on that this weekend. We use Reli-on human meter. Thank you.

WELCOME TO FDMB! Toki sure is a cutie pie! Her numbers are pretty darn good but looks like she still needs a bit of insulin support
Hold on let me find someone that knows Vetsulin
@Red & Rover (GA)
@Panic

I have an idea what to do but would rather one of our veterans guide you.

Hi again Naomi! Yes you are correct, no insulin under 200. Vetsulin is too harsh to use, especially with very little data, to shoot that low.

If you could, in your spreadsheet when you skip can you put "skip" in the dosing slot? Some people might think you weren't around to shoot etc. so it helps to know you intentionally skipped.

What food does Toki eat please?
It would really benefit Toki for an insulin change so you can shoot lower than 200 safely, I am hoping he will be an easy case and just needs a little assistance before hopefully sliding into remission.

Thank you again. This is all overwhelming. He’s on a mix of FF pate or Friskies pate. We are definitely hoping to switch his insulin. We’re switching vets to go to a cat clinic (we’re hoping they’re better dealing with his diabetes than the regular vet, as they’re a specialized clinic.) I have updated his spreadsheet. Thank you again for the help and the suggested Sticky. Not only is this my first time with a sugar kitty-I’ve also never written on any kind of message board like this-so I’m clueless times 2. :)

Could have fooled me, you're doing a great job! :p It's overwhelming for sure, just ask questions often and go at your own pace. We never get tired of repeating stuff if you need it.
I'm going to give you another sheet that I recommend you print out or share with your new vet (fingers crossed!). This is the 2018 AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats. Hopefully they are already familiar with it. It specifies that felines should be using Prozinc or Lantus, and only dogs on Vetsulin. All clinics should be following these guidelines. If you get a script for Lantus, you can buy it from Marks Marine Pharmacy out of Canada at a third of the cost as here in the US.

Those are good foods to use for sure! And thank you for editing the spreadsheet, looks perfect!

Thank you! He’s still under 200 this morning; 197. I fed him and tested an hour later: 185. I’ll test him at +3, +4 and as often as I can whilst we’re home this morning/afternoon.
