How to Help Cat Who Can't Pee

Tonight Wendell peed and pooped as usual. A few minutes ago, he started panting like he did the day he was diagnosed. Then I noticed him going into the litter box and trying to pee, like he did that day. And he can't go. I think it's another bladder infection.

I don't want to stay up all night watching my guy suffer to death. I put out a FB message to see if I have anyone who can take us to an emergency vet. In the meantime, what can I do? IS there anyway to expel the urine so he can have some relief till we can get to the regular vet in the morning?

Thanks.

It could be a kidney stone or something else blocking the urethra. So this is important to get Wendell to an emergency vet and not wait until the morning. His bladder could rupture if you try and force the issue. Or if you delay too long in getting him to the vet.

From catinfo.org article on Urinary Tract Health.
The urethra is the tube that drains urine from the bladder to the outside. It can be partially or completely blocked with mucus, stones, inflammatory cells, or crystals. This is a life-threatening - and very painful - condition which can result in the bladder rupturing within 24 hours of a complete urethral obstruction - leading to death soon after.

Any cat that is repeatedly entering the litter box but not voiding any urine is in need of IMMEDIATE medical attention! This is one reason why it is so important to use a clumping (scoopable) litter. Clumping litter allows you to see just how much, if any, urine is being voided.

Males are much more prone to 'blocking' than females because the male urethra is much longer and more narrow than a female's.

What size was the pee that he did? Normal size? golf ball size? marble size?

Is Wendell still on the dry food indicated in your signature?

Is he repeatedly going to the litter box and straining, but no urine comes out?
Or does he pee in tiny little dribbles?

We're in Northern New Jersey.
He is still on the dry food.
He ate. He cried some more. He sat quietly and groomed himself. Then he got into the box and squirted out a nice ketone-free little puddle. I hope that means he's ok for now.
Question: Should I leave water out for him or take it away?
Vet opens in 8 hours.

I think you want to leave that water out. Plus, a visit to the vet in the am would be good.

How little was the urine puddle?

If he has urinary tract issues, the best thing you can do for Wendell is more water in the diet. Best way to do that, is canned food. If I remember correctly, Wendell was one of those stubborn kitties that turned his nose up at the canned food. Correct?

Yes. Tonight I gave him some tuna, which he gets a few times a week in tuna water.
Size-wise, I'd say, big enough to make a splash if I tapped my toe into it?

He may be ok until the morning. I just don't know enough to be sure.

It's your call. You know him better than we do.

I'll be worrying about how he is doing, so please post back and let us know after the vet visit.

Have to go now. Sleep required so I can work tomorrow.

After he peed we had a very quiet night. At one point he was next to me in bed purring. . . a far cry from the howling and panting of a few hours earlier. We are headed to the vet.

Wendell actually had a pretty good night once he peed. This morning we had some good cuddle/purring time.

On the way to the vet, where I was prepared to pay hundreds of dollars on tests to figure out all of his symptoms, it hit me that I didn't want him to have any more pain. . . that it was time.

I made the decision to put him to sleep. Wendell died a little before noon this morning. I believe I made the right decision.

Thank you all for your suggestions and guidance these last few months.

Oh Carli! I'm so sorry to read that it was Wendell's time to go. Remember all the good times you had together and treasure those memories.

Wendell, fly free little one. You have earned your wings. wings_cat

A ring of candles, in Wendell's honor.
