I know some of you give this to your babies- can you tell me how you administer it and how often? my vet prescribed 1/4 tablet twice a day, crushed in his food. Well, he isn't eating much of his food, so I'm not sure he is getting it all. Then I glanced at Tanya's page and see that is a very heavy dose. I'm not sure what to do.

I can't get on Tanya's message board at work, which is why I am posting here. Unfortunately, this is when I have more time to post thanks to my busy schedule with four kids at home ;-)
Thanks!!!!

My vet suggested 1/4 Pepcid once a day. I just popped it into her like a regular pill. I didn't realize that was a large dose though. You could try 1/8 of a tablet twice a day if you can cut it that small. I know that's the dose for some IBD kitties who need it regularly.

@Critter Mom, do you know? I think you've mentioned using Pepcid before. I used it years ago for my cat Cinnamon (GA 2010) and haven't used it since. But I'd like to have it in my arsenal for Marshmallow.

The usual dosage is 1/4 pill once a day.. Make sure you get the regular strength pill which is 10mg. There are other strengths out there so be sure to check the strength. You can try pilling it, and syringing a bit of water or mix it with some plain broth or a little tuna juice if he won't take it with food.

For one of mine that sometime needs it but is almost impossible to pill, I crush it between 2 spoons, add a few drops of water then draw it up in a feeding syringe. It doesn't mix overly well and if it takes very long to get it in him, it separates - I usually start with 1/2 a 10mg pill, I get about 1/4th in him with the rest remaining in the syringe.

You can use as much as 1/2 a tablet. The typical dose is 1/4 of a 10 mg famotidine once daily given right before you go to bed at night. I just sit on the floor on my heels, pull Squeaker into the "V", wiggle my finger in the side of his mouth until he opens, tilt his head back, and drop it down his throat. Takes on a couple of seconds.

I believe that famotidine (Pepcid AC) is very bitter. Consequently I've not tried to give it to Saoirse in food. Saoirse weighs approximately 10lb/4.5kg. I give her 1/4 of a 10mg tablet daily.

I did not find it as effective as an anti-nausea treatment, though it did help Saoirse in the early stages of her bad pancreatitis flare when she occasionally vomited up white foam when she hadn't eaten for a while.

Another option might be to try slippery elm bark powder mixed into the food. It's a natural treatment for stomach acid/GI tract irritation. (See Tanya's site for how to use it.)
