How to check insulin

Our Clare has had consistently high numbers for the last three days. We've increased her insulin dosage a bit, but still no response. I'm wondering if our insulin is corrupted somehow. Is there a way to check it? Thank you!

Hi Mel,

We've been using it since June 11. It's been in the refrigerator except for one 4-hour period and one overnight (just last night).

It shouldn't be wearing out just yet although it is possible. I'm shooting two and mine are on Levemir but I usually get about 2 months from a pen. Are you using a pen or vial? Vials degrade faster than a pen. But if its clear without any floaties it should still be good if its a pen. Otherwise the only other way to test it is open a new pen and see if the numbers improve.

I tried to check her spreadsheet but the link doesn't seem to be working. There are lots of things that can cause higher numbers besides the strength of the insulin but without seeing the numbers I can't even begin to guess.

Also, look for signs of infection - respiratory, dental, and bladder infections are common triggers of increased glucose levels.

Thanks for suggesting that we rule out an infection. We'll have the lab results tomorrow.
