I have been searching everywhere and I can't seem to get a proper answer on how frequently it is safe to give adequan to my ckd sugarbaby. Most of what I find suggests every 3-4 weeks but Cuddles is in pain after just 2 weeks. I don't want to make his ckd worse but I also don't want to see him hurting either. Please, any advice is much appreciated.

Have you tried other remedies to complement the adequan? Acupuncture - by an expert, and acupressure - that you can do at home yourself, have both been know to help. Also supplements like cosequin or joint guard. For a specific answer on adequan for CKD kitties have you tried Tanya's website? The information there for CKD kitties is extensive and many of us use it as a reliable source of information on various topics. I'm not aware of any specific limits because of being diabetic.

I looked over the Adequan information on Tanya's website. There is very little information there about Adequan (http://www.felinecrf.org/treatments_general_health.htm). There is a link to marvistavet.com that reports that dogs who were given 7x the recommended dose of Adequan were seen to have enlarged kidneys. So Adequan may possibly cause kidney issues at high doses.

I've been giving my CKD cat Adequan for about 3 years (post CKD diagnosis) as he has arthritis in his lower back and both hips. I started off at 0.2 ml twice a week, until it kicked in, and then was able to reduce it to 0.2 ml once a week. Last summer, I noticed Edwin was getting gimpier and upped his dose back up to 0.2 ml twice a week. I'd be interested in hearing what dosages other people are using in their cats.

Just prior to his diabetes diagnosis, Edwin licked a bald patch on his front leg as the arthritis pain seems to have spread there too. I started him on Tramadol at that time and it seems to have helped. I had previously tried buprenorphine for his pain, but that didn't seem to help and just made him stare off into the distance a lot.

I've done a fair amount of body work, trigger point therapy, acupressure, and accupuntcture on myself. I've also had a number of trained practitioners work on me. I've tried to work on Edwin, but he will not let me do anything with his hips or back, not even just very gentle manipulation. @Vyktors Mum do you happen to know of a good reference for acupressure/accupuncture points on cats (specifically on ears, feet, legs, or hips)? I have pressballs and accupunture needles, but I'm only at the skill level of using needles in areas that are not near major organs.

Hi @bsmith I see where you were directing the question to @Vyktors Mum ; you might shoot a pm to @Wendy&Neko, she has been having Neko treated for quite some time with good results.

I give it every 3 weeks.... and may have to move it to two....
there isn't much research on cats and adequan.... just horses and dogs.
I believe some vet tried it on cats and noticed it helped.
I give 0.25 ml .

I think amy and Trixie used it, perhaps on another cat, I do remember someone was using it every 2 weeks....

Thanks. I'll do that.

Hmmm... from what I've been seeing I seem to be dosing more often than other people. Though, some people seem to give a large dose, but then only dose once every 4-5 weeks. I give 0.2 ml twice a week every week.

You're also correct that Adequan is being given to cats off label. Though it's good that some choices are available. When I went through this with my previous kitty over 16 years ago, severe arthritis and CKD, there were virtually no treatment options for arthritis treatment. I believe shark cartilage was suggested, but that was it.

However, even at this dose Edwin's kidney numbers seem to be staying at the same levels that he's been at for years. I have to say that even if it was slowly worsening his kidney numbers that I would probably still keep giving it to him. It's one of those quality of life versus quantity questions. His attitude and his mobility have been greatly improved since he started Adequan. Of course, every cat reacts differently to medications, but for him it's definitely been the best choice.
