Have you tried other remedies to complement the adequan? Acupuncture - by an expert, and acupressure - that you can do at home yourself, have both been know to help. Also supplements like cosequin or joint guard. For a specific answer on adequan for CKD kitties have you tried Tanya's website? The information there for CKD kitties is extensive and many of us use it as a reliable source of information on various topics. I'm not aware of any specific limits because of being diabetic.
I looked over the Adequan information on Tanya's website. There is very little information there about Adequan (
http://www.felinecrf.org/treatments_general_health.htm). There is a link to marvistavet.com that reports that dogs who were given 7x the recommended dose of Adequan were seen to have enlarged kidneys. So Adequan may possibly cause kidney issues at high doses.
I've been giving my CKD cat Adequan for about 3 years (post CKD diagnosis) as he has arthritis in his lower back and both hips. I started off at 0.2 ml twice a week, until it kicked in, and then was able to reduce it to 0.2 ml once a week. Last summer, I noticed Edwin was getting gimpier and upped his dose back up to 0.2 ml twice a week. I'd be interested in hearing what dosages other people are using in their cats.
Just prior to his diabetes diagnosis, Edwin licked a bald patch on his front leg as the arthritis pain seems to have spread there too. I started him on Tramadol at that time and it seems to have helped. I had previously tried buprenorphine for his pain, but that didn't seem to help and just made him stare off into the distance a lot.
I've done a fair amount of body work, trigger point therapy, acupressure, and accupuntcture on myself. I've also had a number of trained practitioners work on me. I've tried to work on Edwin, but he will not let me do anything with his hips or back, not even just very gentle manipulation.
@Vyktors Mum do you happen to know of a good reference for acupressure/accupuncture points on cats (specifically on ears, feet, legs, or hips)? I have pressballs and accupunture needles, but I'm only at the skill level of using needles in areas that are not near major organs.
