How often going forward

hi all advisors,
Just picked my Dexter up from the vet today. I’ve been back every Friday for the past 3 weeks. They want me to bring him back again next Friday but I am not.
#1 I can’t afford it each week
#2 they are doing a curve on him each time
Granted he has just been diagnosed and we’re trying to get a good dosage level
He is at 3 1/2 Novolin. Glucose was 226 today.
I just got my alphatrak in and will begin Home testing. Not every day.
Question: how often do you take yours to the vet for dosage updates???
I plan on just watching him and seeing how he is day to day and begin Home testing. Looking for advise going forward.

Once you are home testing, there is no reason to go to the vet for BG testing. You can get all the data you need for dosing decisions yourself. You can send the vet the info as needed to include them in those dosing decisions, or, if you end up like most of us, you will pretty much be handling dosing decisions on your own. I asked Mia's vet how often I should bring her in for check ups (blood work and urinalysis, mainly), and he said no more than every three months and really, I do not need to do it that often. If you need an insulin prescription, you are probably going to have to see a vet periodically, but by NO means weekly!!!

Short answer, I don't. I don't even send the curves I do. I will show my spreadsheet when asked and will discuss my dosing decisions with his IM vet if he asks. when I am in for Jones' IBD appointments. Otherwise, he leaves it to me and this board. Our orginal vet, showed me how to home test and sent me home. Showed how Jones was doing and she thought it was wonderful.


That all said...I am in Canada and not need a prescription to get the Lantus insulin Jones is on.

Home testing is less daunting once you've actually done it a few times. Most of us here don't rely on the vet for dosing decisions - we learn our kitty's responses by testing, logging data on a spreadsheet and asking questions here.

My cat was just diagnosed. I was so nervous to check him. I had all the stuff but didn’t do it for 3 days. When I finally did, I was relieved at how easy it was.
