How often do you do curves?

I have just reduced Reece’s Vetsulin to .6u down from 1u (still 2x daily). Now her numbers look like they’re creeping back up. How often do you recommend 1 - sticking with a new dose and 2 - doing a curve?

TIA!

While there are general rules and guidelines for curves we often bend those rules. Keeping to a strict timetable won't work if the cat is somewhere in the basement or a closet so being off 5 or 15 minutes either way does not disqualify the results. Stress also affects numbers but it can be more than the stress of a trip to the vet. Nigel was regulated and actually loved being in the car. He'd prance around the vet's office showing off but his numbers there were useless. Noah was unregulated and beyond nervous. If there was a knock at the door he'd be in the basement totally stressed out so his numbers looked like a child drawing on the wall with crayons.
One curve is often not enough. Plan your curves ahead of time for a quiet day and even if you get a textbook curve do it again three days or three weeks later. The whole idea is to get a general idea of a typical day and again when you change the dose.
To give you an idea of what I dealt with; if it were not for traffic Nigel would have walked from the car into the vet's office, Noah had to be wrapped in piddle pads. It's never the same thing twice. :banghead:

If you get a scattering of BG data each and every day, you don't really need to do a curve or only rarely when you want to see the full action profile of a dose you think is working well. The daily data is much more useful in assessing a dose because it reveals BG patterns over days rather than on one day only.

My vet recommended at least 10 days after a dose change. Unless you see an immediate reason to switch doses (like a hypo episode) you should keep at a dose for about that long before adjusting.

I do a curve every blue moon or less frequency. I very seldom do curves. I do do spot checks and only do a curve if things are not as expected.

One more thing. If you increase the dose that would call for a minimum of a mid-day test.
Increase or decrease your doses in small increments and be patient for a change in numbers. It's a cliché but it's true, it's a marathon and not a sprint.
