How Much Food Should He be Getting?

Thank you to everyone who responded to my cry for help regarding my 10 yr old orange tabby Basil.

I returned the expensive Royal Canin So dry and wet food to the vet. With my $97 refund I went out and purchased some Wellness and Fancy Feast classic food for Basil and his brother.

I'm questioning how much I should be feeding him, as I am aiming to help him lose some weight. He used to get half a can of Friskies pate for breakfast and dinner, and a small frozen portion for when I was at work throughout the day. I realize now that he was probably getting too much food, and am really trying to keep his bg at a manageable number.

For breakfast he and his brother split a can of FF, which I added a bit of water to, and they both ate all of it. I tested Basil about an hour after he ate and he was at 155. He and Monkey have been following me around and making frequent trips to the kitchen, looking for food.

I just tested him again and he was at 106.2, so I fed both of them a little bit of Wellness ckn mixed with some water.

I have to go out later today, so will feed them dinner before I go, and then test him when I get home.

I plan on doing a full curve tomorrow, when I can stay home all day.

What amount do those of you who don't give your cats insulin feed your babies? I don't want to restrict him too much, and would really appreciate your input.

thanks!

Hi Leanne,

It's all about calories. On Dr. Lisa's latest update of the food charts, the amount of calories per can is included, and that can be a good starting point for you.

She has a lot of information regarding how many calories a cat needs per day on this page:

ECID, but I try to keep Bob (he's been OTJ for 16 months) on a diet of 20 calories per day, per pound of ideal weight, which my vet says is 13 pounds or so. I try for about 250 a day give or take depending on flavor. He actually looks like he's gained too much, and I'll have to cut that back. His big problem is laziness. I think he was a sloth in a prior life.

Dr. Lisa's site also gives tips on how to get a cat to lose weight if needed.

What about the cat that is underweight (pancreatitis, went DKA before dx). What is a save rate of weight gain while trying to regulate BG. This cat has been through so much that it's amazing he is maintaining weight at 7 pounds (originally 10.5), but he's skin and bones and we want him to start gaining.

I just joined and haven't posted his information yet, working on that. His name is Xoom-Xoom, a Birman, pet name is Xuxu (pronounced Zoozoo). Currently on Lantus, but yo-yos between >750 and 20. Has gone comatose twice. This site has been a godsend of information since my vet has never used Lantus and never seen a DM cat so hard to regulate. But she is willing to call specialists (although you get as many different opinions as you call) and we are learning together. We did an ultrasound, so we know it's a small area of inflammation in the pancreas, and not pancreatic cancer. That's been the only reason we are putting him through all this, poor cat is a pin cushion. But he has a sweet personality, and has put up with it all in good temper.
