How Much Food Do You Feed Kitty?

I know calorie consumption is different for all cats depending on their weight and size as well as the differences in the calorie composition of foods- but just wanted to get an idea of how much your kitty eats in a day.

What is your cat's weight and how much does he eat? How often does he eat?

I saw one lady posting that she feeds her cat 11-12 oz of cat food a day and has been struggling with her kitty's high BG numbers. Could that be too much food for kitty? I certainly don't have any details on her cat's situation or if she is feeding him more calories to gain weight- I do know her kitty is sick.

For reference, my kitty weighs just over 15 lbs (he was 18-19 lbs before suffering a DKA episode and losing weight). The vet recommended calorie goal for him is 1 1/2 cans of wet food (5.5 oz cans). This would be 8.25 oz of food per day- and this is for a large 15 lb maine coon sweetie. Does 12 oz sound like a lot? Now that Ozzy is back to eating well again on his own, he does seem to want more food. Should we be feeding him more than the 8.25 oz of wet?

How much does your diabetic kitty eat?
 
You feed the amount necessary to reach/maintain the cat's desired weight, The rule of thumb is 20-30 kcal/lb of desired weight.
Another rule is one 5.5 oz can for 8 lb cat.
My 15 lb diabetic Bun Bun maintains his 15 lb weight on 1/2 of a 5.5 oz can twice daily.

My 12 lb Badger requires a littele more to maintain his weight

The ginger bor was my Bailey. The "tuxedo" cat was my Scottish Fold Twiggy. She was black/brown and white, not really a tuxedo.

I've been feeding junior 3 oz of fancy feast chicken classic twice a day. Not sure if it's enough but will monitor his weight closely. Before diabetes I used to feed him 3/4 cup of veterinarian moderate SO. He was 13 pounds then and now his 10.5 pounds but I believe the lost in weight was due to uncontrolled diabetes.

You should check out catinfo.org. It was through that site I learned about thi forum. Very knowledgeable doctor with tons of information on nutrient and diet and health. I am pretty new here so that's as much as I can collaborate. Hope ozzy is doing better I've been reading your threads
 
Hi. Here's the formula I use for my cats. 13 X cat's weight + 70. So using a 10 lb cat as an example would be 13 X 10 = 130 + 70= 200 calories. Like you said, every cat is different ( ECID, you'll hear that around here a lot, LOL) and you would consider your cat's age and activity level. Bubba is about 16 lbs and I am giving him 280 calories a day to maintain which turns out to be a different quantity of food a day depending on what he is eating that day. For instance the rabbit calories are lower than the same volume of venison which is higher in calories.

If you cat needs to lose weight use the weight you would like to see in the formula and the same if kitty needs to gain weight. It is a good starting point and you can tweak it as you go along.
