I've finally gotten my cat to want to eat wet Fancy Feast Chicken Classic (I have to add water & blend it to the consistency of baby food). His glucose #s are running very high which makes him more hungry than usual. He gobbles up a whole can and wants more. The FF can is 3 oz. says "feed an average size adult cat 1 can per 3 1/2 pounds of body weight daily." My cat weighs 15 lbs - so that would be approx. 4 cans a day. Is that too much for a diabetic cat??

His body may not be able to extract the nutrients he needs from only 4oz, and if he wants more, give him more. The water you are adding is terrific; I have added equal amounts of water to food, but sometimes 1 part water and 2parts food. The easiest way for me was to just fill the empty food can with water and mix it into the food.

If his numbers are high, be sure he is not sick, and if vet says no problems, you may be needing to raise his insulin dose.

Hey "Gayle Shadoe & Oliver" - you gave me some good input on my other post about Fred. I posted an update today. (I think his glucose is high due to chronic overdose and am trying to lower his dose to confirm/rule out - any input on that new post would be greatly appreciated.)

I am adding 1/2 can of water to the FF and that seems to be the consistency he likes (he won't eat it unless it's the perfect blend and texture). So you think ok to give him as much as he wants?

The Fancy Beast chicken feast classic is the fave in out household for over 10 years.

I always leave a few bowls of the wet out for the 'kids' to eat and it's never hurt them for it to sit out for half a day. Also, I never go by the serving suggetions on the can, I put out what I think they'll need and my vet is A OK with that. (Cougars bury their food for weeks and will come back and eat from their cache.)

What I do to make the stiff pate' easier to eat is this. I empty the food into a bowl, mash it up a bit with a fork and then add 2 to 3 tablespoons of filtered water to the bowl and mash that up to a nice medium (but not soupy) 'slurry' as my vet tech/babysitter/housesitter calls it. She got me into doing this as she found that all the cats prefered a nice consistancy to the wet food, they eat it all up and there was no waste.

For Blondie, being that he had the 'dire beasties', this was the perfect food to have out for him and he thrived on his Fancy Beast being presented to him each day in this manner, for years.

This way of adding the filtered water to the Fancy Beast helps keep the furkids hydrated and there is no waste of food. just be sure you don't put too much water in it if you try it this way. V
