? How many Temptations make a meal?

OK, I know Temptations aren't an acceptable meal, so please give me some alternatives. Tibby ate a lot for dinner and barfed it all up a couple minutes after his insulin shot, plus a hairball. I offered some A/D, but probably should have waited 5 or 10 minutes because his tummy was still in regurgitate mode and that came right up also. I was really worried because he just had his insulin, so I gave him some Temptations. His appetite is really good, and he seemed otherwise OK. I think he just ate too much too fast, and then there was the hairball. But now the carbs in the Temptations will probably screw up BG readings. I'll keep checking him every hour. Suggestions please.

The Temptations stayed down, so an hour later, I gave him a few bites of Fancy Feast Classic Beef. I put the rest down for the others, and Tibby had to have some of that too, but this time he ate slowly. So far, so good.

When a cat is vomiting, vets may suggest waiting to feed and offering plain, cool water only, for a few hours, then offering small amounts of food. Depending on the glucose level (are you home testing?) and whether or not your cat has experienced ketones, you may want to skip insulin for one shot or give a reduced dose.

Freeze dried chicken (ex PureBites, get the dog sized for better cost per ounce, and crumble smaller), may be used to perk appetite, but is not complete nutrition.

A/D is pretty high fat, which may not go down too well on an upset stomach.

If you are give a long-acting insulin such as Lantus, Levemir, ProZinc, or PZI, as the glucose lowers, hunger should be experienced and the cat begin eating unless a severe condition is being experienced (ex pancreatitis).

I have a cat that occasionally eats too fast and then scarfs it back up. I feed her a small amount at a time, spread thinly on a plate. It seems to work for her.

With a history of DKA, you may want to get urine ketone testing strips and a blood ketone meter to confirm any elevated urine ketone tests. KetoStix are 1 brand and may be behind the pharmacy counter. Precision Xtra and Nova Max Plus are 2 blood ketone meters - compare test strip costs to determine which you want to get.

I got some ReliOn ketone dipsticks. So far, I've had no luck catching Tibby at pee time. He's already done and covering up. I keep the test strips near his favorite litterbox for when I do get there in time.

There are some tips on getting a specimen in my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools.
