How long without ProZinc?

I am posting this again in this board for those of you with ProZinc experience...Please note this is not our preference to go without giving her her medicine, but she isn't giving us a choice :(

After this past weekend of Cali being uncooperative with the pet sitter giving her her insulin shots, they have refused to try to do so again in the future. We had a hard enough time finding someone who would do this for us in the first place and we know that no matter who it is, if it isn't my husband or I, Cali won't cooperate.

I don't know what to do now. We are going away for Christmas and cannot take her with us. We can have them give her food, but not shots. That would mean she would go 3-4 days without her insulin. Boarding her is also not an option--she doesn't do well in situations like that and would be so stressed her numbers would be off the charts.

Any suggestions or words of encouragement in this situation???

Well, you have 2+ weeks? If I were you, I would really work on getting her regulated. You have okay amps numbers but you need to get some mid cycle numbers to see how the insulin is working.

Once you have some dose history, it might be that we could figure out a good safe dose for 3 days. Surely a vet tech could give the shots for you. Or if a few days without insulin might be okay. But without more data, it is impossible to know.

We'll try to get more tests but can't during the day as we are at work. We can only do one a night or so--she hates being tested as well and it is difficult. We'll try our best really.

I truly think a vet won't have much more luck, so I'd really like to figure out how we can get away with not shooting while we are away--which I know is scandalous. I think it is our only option?

You do run the risk of her going too high and going into DKA which can be fatal. It certainly would not be a great situation if you can figure out anything else.

The lessor of the two evils would be to board her even if she doesn't like it and her numbers would soar, because at least then she would be getting the care and insulin that she needs.

If she goes without insulin for 3 to 4 days you run the risk of DKA, which could be a death sentence.

All,
Hopefully this will work out. It was also in Health where I found it...
Jennifer (Tuckers Mom) is in contact with Becky and the solution may be for her to check on Cali or be able to get others to help as well. I think Jenn may visit to see how difficult Cali is.
