Mister still won't put on weight and constantly seems hungry/thirsty. He gets a unit of insulin 2x a day and his sugar usually in the 175 range. His coat is still dull and drab. He's active and fine but he still looks sickly thin and he has patches of hair that won't grow back.

How do I decide if I should increase insulin and to what amount?

Welcome! Can you give us some more information: What kind of insulin? When is he in the 175 range - midcycle or before the shot? Do you have some other numbers you can share? What does he eat?

Prozinc insulin. 175 at about mid cycle. He eats friskies soft food and occasionally blue buffalo kibble. Number? I have an entire day of testing every hour numbers...

Thanks

You've got numbers! that's terrific

We put them in a Google Docs spreadsheet.

First, get an account with Google - its free.

Then follow these instructions.

AMPS = morning pre-shot test
PMPS = evening pre-shot test
Units = how much insulin
+1 = the result of any test 1 hour after insulin shot
+2 = the result of any test 2 hours after insulin shot
etc.
Notes = anything that may be pertinent to understanding what is going on - appetite, illness, food change, etc.

Is the Friskies the pate types? Not all are low enough carb and if you are feeding high carb ones, a change to low carb ones will help bring down the numbers. Same with stopping the dry.. even a little dry (tablespoon) can spike a cats blood glucose for more than 24 hours..

Can you get data for 3 days in a row for us? Preshot tests and a few mid cycle? That will help us see if he is bouncing or not, before we advise on dose and a spreadsheet would be even better!!

thanks
Wendy
