How long does your ProZinc last?

I haven't been able to find any place that tells me how long my vial of Prozinc "should" last -- other than statements that it should last "a long time." Does that mean six months? A year? I know that it will depend upon how the insulin is handled, but I'm just looking to get an idea based upon other users' experiences with it....

The reason I ask is that our vial is five months old, and I'm on such a tight budget that I'd really can't buy a new vial just to see if a new vial works better. (I'm currently looking for a second job, in order to make ends meet.) Motska gets .5u BID, so we still have plenty of insulin left in the vial. Her numbers are still okay, although not where I'd like them to be (she was one of those rare cats that did really well on Vetsulin). Just curious....

Thanks!

Kris

There are many conflicting opinions on this .... my feeling is if you are getting decent, normal numbers, it's probably fine.

(who uses a vial a month ........ ohmygod_smile

Like Nancy said, there are differing opinions her.

My Kitty, usea a vial a month--due to her high dose. But, I am a firm believer that the new vials do have more potency. But, my findings have been that the difference is ....on and old vial you might need .6 to get the same result that a new vial would give you on .4. So, the difference can be overcome on the old vial by incresing your dose a little.

I am not encouraging you to increase your dose---but, that is what I have had to do to compensate for "old" vials. I always reduce when I start a new vial.

I hope this helps!

I use compounded pzi and the box had an exp date on it so I have have just gone by that. First one I got in may and it expired in august. My current vial (still unused!) I bought the first of august and it says it's good till mid-december. If I can figure out how to ship it cold I plan on donating it. Asuming that's legal?

I used my Prozinc for 1 full year, right down to the last drop and never saw any loss in potency.

Although others have had different experiences.

Thanks for the replies everybody -- that makes me feel better! As long as I'm still getting a decent nadir, I'll keep on using it -- even if I have to increase the dose a touch.

I apologize for not checking back in sooner -- my roommate (the one that owns the house) hasn't paid the cable bill, so now we have no itnernet. And it probably won't be turned back on anytime soon, because she's also past-due on the electric bill. She has until Friday to pay it -- and it's up to $900 now, because she's gotten so far behind and racked up so much in repeated late fees! I have no idea why she's so far behind -- she's not paying the mortgage, and there are two of us giving her rent money every month. (Actually, I DO know why -- it involves her "mind-altering-chemical" habits and partying.) So I'm here at Starbucks applying for 2nd jobs -- I have to get out of this house!!!! (End rant....)

Thanks again for your help!

Love and hugs,

Kris

My compounded from Baltimore gave 1 year expiration date. Hardly touched as Maisey was only on for a shade over a month and low doses at that. I'm one of the rare ones with a U100 PZI
