How long does it take for Clavamox to work for URI?

Hi Bam Bam, the db kitty I rescued from the kill shelter seems to be getting worse, not better on this Clavamox....maybe I haven't given it enough time...he has had 5 doses now...gets his dose 6 in a few hours.

He is on 0.8 ml BID. He is 8.3 lbs acc. to shelter records. Very underweight, boney.

His congestion is much much worse, he swallows a lot and perhaps is wheezing a bit, not sure, I hear sounds coming out of him and now have to figure out what they are. But very very congested. But he is still eating. BGs are not so great--300s and low 400s...started him on 0.5U, trying to decide if I should bump him up a bit.

It may be the wrong antibiotic for what he has. Vets make their best guess based on symptoms and what they've been seeing, but short of a culture and sensitivity process, its a shot in the dark. Check back with the vet.

And if it is a virus, an antibiotic won't help. Are you adding any powdered lysine to the food? If it us feline herpes virus, sometimes that helps. They also make treats with the lysine in them - ex. Vetri-Lysine, which my cats gobble right up.

Thank you. Well the shelter gives out Doxy when the cat leaves, but that is so harsh, I wanted to use the Clavamox which is a little nicer. But could also be that he is dehydrated and so making his congestion thicker and also the higher BGs are keeping his immune system weakened.

I'm taking him to the vet in an hour. Although this is the vet that overdosed Sebastian (Shane)in the past, so I"m hoping he doesn't think he needs to stay overnight. But he does need fluids I think and I don't have any here at the moment.

It felt like he had a strange lump in his lower side flank, both when standing and when lying, but on opposite sides on each I didn't want to push it--maybe it's normal and because he's so thin...but seemed like a big bulge...anyway, we will see.

Bam Bam just had his 5th day dose and I think he's a bit better...still congested but not as bad as previoius days. I took him to the veet and the vet said that it can take 3 to 5 days for it to start to show improvement, he also gave me a backup script for Zeniquin in case I wanted to switch over. He also said it was possible to do Clavamox TID and it tended to work a little better than way.

I'm sticing with the BID and giving it another couple of days...but I think he will be ok.
