Hello,
Abby & Molly here! I gave Molly her 1st 2 doses of Basaglar 8/23!
*Her AMPS was 259
*Gave her .5 unit
*Checked at 6 hr mark & BG was 259
*PMPS was 260
*Gave .5 unit

8/24
AMPS is 290! What the heck? When you start a cat on insulin how long does it take to start seeing the BG drop?.... knowing it takes 2 hours for the insulin to start kicking in after dose but why is it going up and not down?

She does have a gum infection again and had to start on antibiotics yesterday. Possibly why?

Thank you for any help!

From what I understand, the first couple of doses on a depot insulin like Basaglar will not do much of anything. This is because the depot is filling, so not all of the insulin is going towards Molly's BG. Part of it is going towards the depot. Starting off, it can take up to 5-7 days for the depot to fill and for you to see Molly's BGs coming down. An infection can definitely keep a kitty's BGs high as well, so it could be both. I received some fantastic advice when I was first starting on Basaglar (I came from a quick-acting, in-and-out insulin called Vetuslin before switching). This information was super helpful because it really helped me understand the depot and how an insulin like Basaglar (glargine) or Levemir works. The link to my 5/26 condo if you're interested in reading is HERE.

Read it and that helps me a lot. Thank you.

2 Vets my cat has seen have provided very little support and information. They all just referred me here and basically said "Here's your prescription Good luck!" It's really infuriating and adds ti the stress of the situation. (For pet abd parent) Why would you blow off a patient like that when this is a life threatening illness? There are classes people take when they are diagnosed why is there not classes for pet owners?

Anywho .... thank you for the reply!

I had the exact same experience. If I hadn't found this forum, I shudder to know where we'd be.

Don't take the Vets personally, they are not the owners of your cat and many are not well versed in FD other then the diagnosis and prescribed insulin. It can take a week, maybe more as ECID (every cat is different) and not only are they filling the depot, they are getting used to having insulin which lowers the BG, something that they've gotten used to being high. You need to do home testing several hours a day and start a Spread Sheet so everyone here can see what her numbers are. The more info the better.............We have all been there, some longer then others and this forum is GREAT for everyone beginner to expert (do we have experts, lol) or experienced with FD and other related issues. We have classes for pet owners, it's called the internet and an abundance of info is available, but you are at the right place and start READING all the yellow stickies on the first page and then read them again, again, again and again. And when you think you figured it out, start reading again. It's NOT EASY and we all get frustrated, so you are not alone.

2 days on insulin isn't going to show results. Look at Davidson's SS for this year.....he came out of remission in Jan and then you can see how long it took for the insulin to take any affect. Also, having any infections and being on AB's will prolong the insulin from working at it's best. Once off the AB's you'll see a big difference.

Many are here to help, but need the information from you to know which direction to go.
