How long after eating....can I shoot

I take the AMPS reading, feed and shoot easily in the morning around 7-8 AM, but they WANT their dinner by 6 PM whether they had lunch or not and had aften grazed some kibble but apparently so 12 hours has not come to pass for a shot till around 7-8PM.

Is it feasible to wait 2 hours after eating to then take the night reading in shoot? That is how it has evolved for me anyway. I try and get a midday read about +6 daily lately. Thanks...

With 2 x 1 unit daily and still high it is time to do another curve later this week I think.

Yes, you could do it that way, but I wouldn't give the full meal 2 hours before - they need some food at shot time, too. How about half the meal 2 hours before and the rest at shot time?

The downside is feeding late in the cycle can reduce the effectiveness of the insulin during that period, but I don't think that's a big enough deal if the is otherwise the best way to make your schedule work.

Alternatively, you could try giving the morning dose earlier, and/or feeding less at shot time and adding some small snacks during the first half of the cycle. It's easier on the pancreas to have several small meals than to have one or two big ones. If you aren't home to feed during the day, consider getting a timed feeder.

I've heard a lot of talk for many beans about feeding primarily in the beginning of the cycle and none or very little in the end of it. Unfortunately, my kids would mutiny if I didn't feed them in the later stages of the cycle, so that's never been an option for us. I've started feeding them at PS, +3, +6, and +9 (give a take an hour on the +3 and +6 sometimes). The +9 really helps tide them over so they leave me alone and are ready to eat at PS. We feed half cans at PS and +3, and quarter cans at +6 and +9. So perhaps a small snack prior to the 2-hour cutoff time may help. It might be worth a try. :)

You should be doing a curve and evaluating the dose each week. If you stay overly long at a dose that keeps him in high numbers, he will develop glucose toxicity and you will have to increase even more to get over it. Don’t forget those night time spot tests, most cats go lower at night.

Both cats bother me for food at the same time, but then don't eat their full portions and walk away just to come back later. That is one issue. The other thing is that I understand the lantus is long acting ER. I'm going to do another curve in the next 48 hours. It has been 2 months and still not there. I'm getting better at getting a reading with only one strip most of the time now. He is fine with taking a shot just about anywhere on his body - ribs cage, side chest or scruff but DOES not want to be bothered while eating!!
