How fast to drop? increased instead

I have decided to go down instead of up to see if there is any improvement. How fast should we drop? Linus is at 1.6u now, he started at 1u and has never been below that. I have the next few days to see what happens, then leave on Tuesday for almost a week. My husband will be taking care of him, and probably not testing except at shot time. I hate to leave him at such high numbers for another week.

Re: How fast to drop?

I don't know, Sue. I don't see very many blues at lower doses. He is hard to figure out; he just doesn't have a very discernible pattern, regardless of dose.

Let's see what others think. I think I might increase, not decrease.

But, if you want to do a low dose test, drop down for a few cycles, test for ketones and test often. If you don't see improved numbers, jump back up.

Re: How fast to drop?

I just want to reiterate what Sue said. Test for ketones FREQUENTLY. Grayson was holding relatively flat in the 300s for cycle after cycle after cycle. Then suddently I had MODERATE ketones and needed to jack up his insulin and do everything to address the ketones. That was Feb 23rd - I'm still giving fluids and my insulin went up 10X in a couple of weeks. I wouldn't want you to go through that, if you can avoid it. So TEST, TEST, TEST! And ask your husband to do the same. DKA can be dangerous - keeping a check on the ketones will prevent you from that cliff.

Based on what I've seen in my two short months, I would think an increase would be in order. I understand not wanting to make too many changes that require a lot of attention when you're gone, but I think my fear of ketones would make me want to do it if I were in your shoes.

I've placed a litter box on a table close to my computer, so that as soon as Grayson heads to the box, I'm there w/ my strip. When it's on the floor, i often don't notice him in the box until he's covering it up!

Good luck with whichever you decide to do.

Re: How fast to drop?

Thanks, Sue. I am really confused. I have seen no improvement at all except that his numbers are more consistent. High but consistent.

Re: How fast to drop?

I think Carl said he's on early mornings this week, so you might not hear from him this late.

Re: How fast to drop?

I chickened out and increased to 1.8 instead. The ketone thing is just too scary to think about, especially if I'm gone. Husband has been shown the strips and told to test if he finds Linus in the litterbox. I'm hoping I'll see something at 1.8. I would take any kind of a curve at this point.

The confusing part is how his BG goes down consistently after eating and not up. I test every morning 2 hours before shot time and feed then. When I test 2 hours later he is almost always lower. Tonight I got home and got a +11 and fed, he was lower an hour later. If his pancreas is working a little, am I discouraging it with more and more insulin?

Re: How fast to drop?

That is unusual, Sue. If his pancreas is helping out, we would usually see a longer cycle. Since food brings him down, can you use that to bring down his numbers overall? Giving mini meals all day long might help - freezing it and letting it thaw or using an automatic feeder.

Re: How fast to drop?

I just looked at his spreadsheet and I guess I'm the one who is confused. Lately, PS numbers are higher, or about the same. They really do sometimes drop, I think, maybe.

Bump to update - after increase to 1.8, +2PM is 302. Haven't seen that low for a while. I may try to check in the night, if I can wake him up :)

hi Sue,
I am glad you increased. I looked at yourSS and it looks like an increase is
in order.
Crossing my fingeres for some good results!

so 302 at +2, 307 at +6, and 377 at +10. So somewhat of a curve - still not as low as I would like, but at least the right shape. Won't be home today for mid-cycle testing, but will be around for the next 3 days, so will see what I'm getting.
