How Do You Properly Draw A .5u or .25u Dose On U-40 Syringe?

For the .5U dose, I keep syringe inserted in bottle and draw up 1 u then push back insulin to what looks like the half mark of 1u. My syringes are only in 1u measurements. For .25, same as above but draw up 1 u and try to eyeball half of .5u. Is this the correct way to do this?

I have been reading some people who let out a drop/drops? How many drops are in 1U? Attached is a pic of my syringe box for gauge, size, etc.

Eyeball or letting out drops - either method. Some people set up reference syringes with coloured water in them to use as a guide. Some go as far as using calipers to measure the column of insulin in the syringe. If you stay with Vetsulin for longer, we'll get you using U100 syringes and a conversion table to make it easier.

I use the u40 syringes with half unit markings. I love them as Smoky seems to be needing doses that are .25 or . 5 lately.
I get the syringes from Carepoint on ADW website. The only con for them is they are not as sturdy as Monoject. I have those also but only in one unit increments.
 
Do I need a prescription for U100s?

Also- how long does vestulin last? Some say 28 days some say as long as 3 months. How do I know when to replace?
 
You can buy u100 syringes in a lot of places. Just make sure to check if they are whole units or have half unit markings.
Smoky was on vetsulin before I switched him to prozinc. The vetsulin started losing its effectiveness on him after 5-6 weeks

Vetsulin should be thrown away 28 days after first puncture...sooner if BGs star to spike for no reason. In real tiny print on info sheet that come with vetsulin it tells this. Also check out vetsulin sticky..I believe it gives further info. Elmo said to tell Ozzy hi :cat:
 
Check out Sticky:Caninsulin/vetsulin User Guide....last two paragraphs of Tip #1.."Know Thy Insulin"...I routinely start checking at day 21 and throw out on day 28 or before if in doubt...
