How do you keep them quiet post surgery?

Our civvie had surgery on Monday. She's home now and we're supposed to keep her quiet, no exercise, no jumping, no stairs.
When we put her in a room alone, she meows and scratches & pounds at the door for hours. If we let her out into the rest of the house, she jumps on furniture.
How do we keep her quiet so she doesn't hurt herself? There was not much sleep to be had last night and it was only day 1 of the 14 she's supposed to be restricted.
 
Short of a cage, good luck! Years ago, Gabby had abdominal surgery. Same instructions -- no activity, jumping etc. I brought her home, opened the carrier, and she jumped on the bed. So much for keeping a cat inactive.
 
uugh. That's what I was afraid of. The incision is on her side, right behind her front leg. I'm worried about her tearing something internally and we won't be able to see it.
We are keeping the basement door closed so she can't go down the stairs, but we're kind of at a loss. Ruby is maaaaaaad about the whole situation. She's actually camped out in the basement (her choice) because obviously brought that thing into the house to torment her. ;-) Midgie hasn't gotten within 4 feet of Ru and Ru is still steaming mad.
 
Check your local Craigslist or equivelent for a 30" or greater length dog crate or buy one new.
It will be just big enough for modest litter pan, food trays, and a place to sleep, with too much room and no jumping opportunities.

If you get a 48" long crate, you'll be able to sit inside it with her (OK, maybe hunched over a bit), when you want to cuddle a bit.
 
She hasn't seem inclined to jump since early this morning. Maybe she realized it wasn't a good idea.
She's been much cuddlier than she's ever been. Its weird when the skittish one decides she wants to curl up in your lap and sleep for an hour.

I did get the "Snuggle Safe" and Midgie is totally unimpressed by it. Ru thinks it the greatest thing ever, though. :lol:

Feel like I missed something. Sorry Midgie needed surgery. I hope she cooperates with the recuperation and all goes well.

Hi Libby,

Over Memorial day weekend I noticed she was breathing a bit heavier than normal. After several whirlwind vet vists, she had surgery on Monday to remove a lobe of her lung. We might have the pathology report as soon as tomorrow. This whole thing just reminds me how lucky I am with Ruby and how easygoing she was/is with all of the pokes and shots. Midgie is half of her size and even 2 days after lung surgery, she's a little fighter.
 
Glad to hear that Midgie has come through her surgery so well :smile: maybe a little too well for her own good :lol:
 
Some things didn't occur to me, like picking up the catnip toys or scratcher pads. She just curled up with the catnip, which much better than her normal rabbit kicking. She did use the scratcher a little, but nothing strenuous. Its the first really "normal" thing she's done.
 
YAY for doing normal things. When I read your note last night, it reminded me of when my son had tubes put in his ears (almost 2 years old). They brought him from recovery back to me in his room with instructions to keep him still and quiet. Yeah, right! When the nurse returned, he was jumping up and down and carrying on in the middle of the room. She gave me a disapproving glare and I said, what do you want me to do, sit on him?! Honestly, I was trying to keep him calm, but sometimes you just can't calm down an almost 2 year old! :lol: :lol:

I hope the report brings good news and SOON! I trust Ruby is doing well, besides not having patience with Midgie? ;-)

Ru's great! Well, like you said, other than being surly. She's slowly starting to come upstairs. Last night she came up for almost 10 minutes, before she turned tail and went back to pouting. :smile:
