Do any of you give aspirin to your kitties?

I give a little more than half a baby aspirin to Fluffy every 72 hours and Adequin once a week.
Aspirin and adequin can both cause blood disorders and i worry every day about bleeding problems.

Today i gave the aspirin early because he needed something for pain.
I cannot get Tremodol down him any way i try. Can't get the pill pusher to work either. He
fights that.
He needs prn medication for pain inbetween both these drugs.
makes me cry.

Sorry Fluffy is in so much pain :( We are getting to the point of trying Adaquan on our Taz. The glucosamine/codroitin (sp?) worked well for her but she just won't take it after a while so we lose the build up benefits.

I have heard that aspirin can be toxic to kitties so I haven't ever considered it. Sadly, it seems like there's not a lot of good options for pain relievers for kitties.

I'm sorry your Fluffy hurts so much. (((hugs)))

Is buprenex an option for you guys? It can be shot, syringed or rubbed on gums...I am able to get it through local pharmacy in 1ml vials...dose for my PK's p-titis pain is .1ml to .3ml depending on pain levels.

We have used Torbugesic as well for kitty pains...mixed with pettinic as the dose is so small ( and bitter) it needs a vehicle, my old vet explained.

the bup works better though.

I also have been told that aspirin is toxic to cats, but have also seen it rx'd, so not sure what to think.

Is it possible to crush the tramadol into dust, scoop and pour into syringe, mix with as little water as it takes to make it liquid, shake and shoot down throat? ( this works for my Deb's phenobarb when she doesn't want to eat it in food.)

Hope kitty feels better soon.

has he tried gabapentin? here's a thread on it, and it looks like Nancy and Cody uses aspirin too. i don't know if she stopped that after starting gabapentin - i'm guessing not, because Cody takes it for his heart, but you can PM her to confirm.

this thread is on spondylosis deformans; some of the suggestions may help (if you haven't tried them already).

our vet and i have also talked about amantadine; we were both planning to research it separately and then discuss.

i would not use not torbugesic. http://vettechs.blogspot.com/2007/07/fo ... gesic.html

you're on the whole cat health list too, right? did they have any suggestions?

is Fluffy's quality of life being affected by this? if i recall correctly, he has severe arthritis, and he's fairly young? imho, if - and only if - you've exhausted every other option, including holistic ones such as acupuncture, you may want to look into metacam. its use is controversial, and not without risk, but if Fluffy's in such pain that quality of life is being compromised, and his kidney function is good, it may be worth considering. you should of course read up on it and its potential effects, to make an informed decision.

Thanks everyone!

Melissa, thanks for the Hugs!
I have used the buprenex for Fluffy until recently and my Vet has not been able to get it for about three weeks now. He said it has been on back order.
The buprenex has worked really well. I had been giving it just prn and like twice a week.
I haven't tried crushing the tramadol because it is so bitter.

WCF and Meowzi thanks for the suggestions!
I have not used the Gabapentin because i read this:

"An increase in formation of adenocarcinomas was observed in rats during preclinical trials, however the clinical significance of these results remains undetermined. Gabapentin is also known to induce pancreatic acinar cell carcinomas in rats through an unknown mechanism, perhaps by stimulation of DNA synthesis"

Fluffy is 8 years old and has Arthritis in both hips that were somehow crushed when he was a few months old. His hips seem stiff and he has a limp that gets more pronounced when he is hurting.
I believe the adaquin is helping. On good days he plays and jumps and runs.
I can tell when he is needing something more for pain because he becomes inactive and he frowns and squints his eyes over and over.
The bupdrenex added as a prn really was working.
The Vet says he needs surgery but i can't get that done at this time.
I can't afford the acupunture and no Vet in this town does it.

Would your vet be willing to write and Rx for you to pick Bup up elsewhere?

My local pharmacy is able to order it for us when needed...WalMart will do it, too, but they make a really big deal of it being a controlled substance and whatnot...it really isn't worth the hassle there.

My local pharm is able to get it in these cute little 1ml glass vials with rubber stopper and darkened glass so I don't have to worry over it so like when the vet fills a clear tube with it that requires special needles to use...what a pain!

Can you crush and mix the tramdol with heavy creme or tuna water to cover the bitter? Shoot quickly down back of throat to avoid taste buds as much as possible and then have second syringe with plain heavy creme or tuna water to wash it all down with quick?

Hope something helps soon...

what about a moist heating pad ( made for use with water) laid out for kitty to nap on? Would that help? ( helps my achy places)

Mary Jo,

Is he talking about an FHO? (removing the femur head)

If so, then that would be a great option...if the pain is confined to the actual hip joint. I am always amazed at how well cats do without the top half of their femur!

Oh Dr. Lisa, i'm so glad to hear from you.
I'm glad you told me this.

That is my understanding of what they will do regarding surgery.

But the clinics here are not 24 hour clinics. They all close at 6pm.
How can i leave Fluffy there all night with no one to look after him.
They have an ER here in town and someone is there all night and all week-end.
I have told my Vet that i couldn't leave Fluffy in a cage alone all night after surgery and he
said the Vet who will do the surgery might let me take Fluffy to the ER for the night hours.

I'm afraid Fluffy might die.
There are no orthropedic surgerons in this area.

Actually....post op patients - unless there are any odd worries....do much better in a QUIET...dark hospital....than a brightly lit...always active...24 hour place where they would get very little rest.

Personally, I hate thinking of animals in E clinics since they get very little sleep. Unless there are complications...which there shouldn't be with this surgery....I would rather have him in a dark, quiet cage to rest overnight.

Ask your vet how many FHOs he has done. It is not a super complicated surgery and if he has done several, you should be fine.

Dr. Lisa you have taken so much stress off me. I have been worrying about this
day and night.
My Vet wants me to see a Vet here in town that he knows real well and he says this Vet
is real good with arthritic problems. I have not yet talked with the other Vet but i will.

Isn't this a painful surgery? How long will Fluffy be in pain?
Thanks

I have only dealt with kittens and teens post FHO and they are up and running just as fast as they are with amputations...which is about as soon as they wake up!!

That said, an older adult is going to have more problems so I don't want to lure you down the wrong path but....

God...or nature...DEFINITELY wired animals differently from humans in terms of their pain. I will spare you the gory details of the injuries that I have seen cats and kittens...and horses...and dogs...go through acting like not much was wrong.

Thank you Dr. Lisa!!

Fluffy sustained his injuries when just a few months old. I found him when he was around
7months. I often wonder how he survived those injuries to his hips and foot. He was just a little kitten out there in pain.
I think he must have had a good mama.
He is so special to me.

Surgery will make him feel so much better.
