My cat, Rosie was just diagnosed with Diabetes a few days ago. I am floundering with all the information that is out there, and my vet is not helping me too much. I have read up on this "Tight Regulation Protocol" by Dr. Hodgkins, and it seems to fit with what I think makes sense. In her literature, it says to feed the cat only wet food (which I have been doing) but that it is necessary to wean a cat off dry food slowly if he or she is used to that high-carb diet, but I can't find any resources on how to do that. Please, if anyone has information, I am all ears. Thanks!

The first question would be if you're already giving insulin. (If so, what kind and how much?) If you are already giving insulin, you do not want to make the food change without learning how to home-test first.

Next, when you do make the food change, you want to do it slowly over a couple of days since it can cause gastrointestinal upset if you change it too quickly. For example, the first day, you want to put about 25% of the new food with 75% of the old food. The next day, 50/50, etc....

But, since you say Rosie has already been eating wet food, it might just be easier to take away the dry completely. What wet foods are you feeding her? For diabetics, we recommend foods with less than 8-10% calories from carbs (the lower the better). There's this great list of nutritional information for most commercial cat foods that you can go off (look for anything less than 8-10% under the first Column C).

That protocol is designed for non-depot insulins such as PZI, Vetsulin, and ProZinc.

We do it differently here using a research proven protocol for Lantus and Levemir, and an adaptation of that for non-depot insulins like PZI and ProZinc.
