I know there are quite a few "hi dose moms/dads here but wasn't sure how much people here in LL visit the other parts of the board. So I hope this is alright to post this update here. confused_cat nailbite_smile

You know me now as mom to Boris but for many years I was known more as Patti and Merlin - mom to a hi dose acrocat....

Just 2 years ago - those of us with hi dose cats really didn't have any options open to us to treat our cats exept for symptoms as they came up.

Yes - we treated them with increasing doses of insulin - Beth's Pickles was on doses as hi as 100units PZI/day. http://petdiabetes.wikia.com/wiki/Categ ... _PZI_cases My Merlin's hi was 45 units PZI + 16 units R/day.
Many of us no longer posted our doses on the board as we often were told we were killing our cats even tho we knew there was nothing more that could be done for them. It's called ACROMEGALY! a pituitary tumor that prevents the cat's body from using their own insulin. In HUMANS - we know them as GIANTS - like ANDRE the giant! PBS has often done specials on this conditon.

Well late 2006 Dr Lunn at Colorado State University began doing Stereotactic Radiosurgery and many of our own FDMB kitties became part of that study. The very first was right here in LL - Joan and Maddie. This has become the first REAL promising treatment for our kitties! More about this to come.....

Of course it's OK to post your note here!! If there's even one person who thinks this applies to their kitty, you've done them a great service.

Personally, I would love it if the acrocat beans would post here more often -- even if it is just updates. (Well, I guess that would apply if Lantus or Lev is your insulin of choice!) I think there's a great deal for everyone to learn about the high dose conditions. I've appreciated the input from several of the acro-moms about dosing and it's helped me to learn more about all three of these conditions.
